Got sick with a cough last week and went home. Ended up in the ER that night. Diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis. Passed away within a week.
No idea what caused it, really no warning. Its a rough day around here.

There are lessons about our shared mortality all around us. But we continue to make plans as if we are in control. At some point, you realize the simple importance of enjoying your day, and finding meaning in your life.
Sorry about your friend.
Sorry about your friend.

Sorry to hear about this.
Something like this happened with one of my co-workers about seven years ago. I don't much of the details, but seemed healthy and complained of nothing. Went to the doctor one day for routine check-up and blood work, admitted into the hospital, and passed away five days later. Something with the kidneys. She was only 50 years old and was a shock.
You never know when your time is up.

Unfortunately, no one knows the day nor hour we will get called.
Enjoy your life with friends/family.

That is contagious, right?
ETA
If I remember correctly, it happens on collage campuses. I had to get a shot because it happened at AU a few years ago.

My guess is cryptococcus neoformans.
In all seriousness, most people who get this are seriously immunocompromised (AIDS, ESRD, diabetes) but it can happen in healthy people, albeit rarely. I’m sorry for your loss.

Fungal meningitis is not spread from person to person. Instead, an individual acquires cryptococcal meningitis when they inhale soil particles contaminated by bird droppings.
The fungus first infects the body, and then the infection spreads to the central nervous system, resulting in cryptococcal meningitis.

People more at risk for developing cryptococcal meningitis will often have one of the following underlying conditions:
HIV
AIDS
diabetes
leukemia
cirrhosis of the liver
transplanted organs
