But why does society care about stopping me from gaining enjoyment? And if the reason is it’s all based on secular laws then what’s really wrong with Jim Crow laws (tor example) since it is “society’s” prerogative

Johnson also heard music in hell, including Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”—traditionally upbeat tunes. Only this time, demons were singing the songs to “torture” people.

If Satan ever does an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, I’m going to ask how often he updates his setlist.

You can attend Mass and never give a dime. Nobody will ask you for money and nobody knows you've never given a dime.

We don’t do shite when they’re dead.

While they’re alive, we punish them because we have laws and for a civilized society. Much like “commandments”. Which by the way Moses got from a talking burning bush because he was on shrooms.
Pretty sure he parted an entire sea on shrooms too.
Moses like to party.

Theists get angry when you point out that their arguments boil down to that they really want to rape and murder people, and the only reason they don't is because they are afraid of being punished for it for eternity. It's honestly a bit terrifying, because the implication is that if that person ever "loses their faith", they will immediately start raping and murdering people.

Vastly different than your friendly neighborhood atheist just going about their business with zero desire to rape or murder anyone.

Or more likely that they prefer the relative freedom of living in open society than being imprisoned.

You give them FAR too much credit.

I didn’t say you had to. But they ask, and it’s well documented that they insist you need to give money for them to continue to give you a place to listen to them.

I still go to Catholic church, occasionally. I use it as an hour of meditation and the sermon. It’s usually always about just being a good person. I don’t give money, I don’t take communion, I don’t sing. Just a good hour of peace for my mind and heart.

So if theres no such thing as a higher power, that we’ll only come into contact with when we are no longer alive, then there’s no point to the one life where we are alive? I don’t understand the obsession with living for an afterlife. It causes people to not truly live their one life on earth.

Not sure how you got that from what I wrote but Ok.

My Faith is the foundation. There was a point in my life where I didn’t believe, now I do. It’s got nothing to do with the “payoff” at the end.

I wrote what I wrote as a hypothetical around people that believe Christians are rubes. Even if I’m incredibly deluded and my beliefs are insane, the net gain to myself and society is still there.

Maybe some of them, sure. I can only speak for one atheist, but I can say authoritatively that even if all laws on the subject were repealed, I would have zero desire to rape or murder anyone. None whatsoever. It blows my mind that such a large percentage of the population seems to move through their daily lives with a nearly overwhelming urge to rape and murder, merely held back by fear of punishment.

So people who don’t believe in a higher power, live a life with no meaning? What if I’m able to get through struggles, and able to find comfort, and to become a better person, without relying on God? I’ve never understood this argument from people.

I never said a single one of those things in my post but thanks for playing.

You are attempting to argue that religious people are
somehow more prone or susceptible to committing atrocious acts than atheists.

That’s one of the most laughable and ridiculous assertions I’ve ever heard. We are all human with the same general instincts, desires, etc.

It’s highly likely that you “have no desire” to rape, kill, steal for many of the same reasons I do. We live fairly comfortable lives with no real enemies or threats.

It’s far more likely that you wouldn’t commit those crimes because you don’t want to risk going to prison. Not because you’re such an amazingly moral person. But you aren’t likely to admit that in this thread.

Incorrect.

Theists frequently argue that without religion, everyone would rape and murder. The only logical underpinning of that argument is that everyone wants to rape and murder, but religion stops them from doing so.

I can’t speak for everyone, but unless said theists are liars, they can only make that argument if they themselves have a desire to rape and murder. Otherwise, their argument is fundamentally dishonest.

So do those theists have a desire to rape and murder, or are they being fundamentally dishonest in their argument in favor of religion?
