That's my secret sauce for dealing with crappy service: Eat at all the ethnic places. Those Chinese and Vietnamese folks know how to provide good customer service. My job has me eating out every day for lunch, and I avoid fast food and the Applebees/Chilis places unless there are zero other options.

Here lately I've been hitting the Tiger gas station in Central at least 2x every week--they do a decent plate lunch. Also, the cafeteria line in the back of Tony's Seafood is a place that it seems only us blue collar folks are able to find.

Agree.

I still get good service from most non chain places, especially smaller ones where the owner is there.

And They are doing relatively well for a restaurant chain in the US.

If you really want to give some constructive criticism to a restaurant close to you that you don’t want to have to avoid for good versus how some exaggerate or even make up stuff solely to get free stuff I would talk to corporate customer service or go online. Likely a contact number on receipt but go straight to corporate not a manager at location if multiple people were awful.

I rarely eat out now. Just so much better eating from home. Better quality, cheaper, and cleaner.

When you sell the best baby back ribs on the planet, you don't have to provide good service.

Yeah… it’s Chili’s.
All the good servers got jobs at higher end restaurants where they getting 20% automatically.

Only exceptions I see are in places where I’d go broke eating there all the time.

Or in the old school places we go with old folks and/or owner-family-members working there.

It's not just Chilli's. Couple of weeks ago we went to a local "high end" steakhouse (been around for 30+ years and well liked) and the Server was horrible. We asked for a minute to review the wine list, 20 minutes later she came back to take our order. Ordered apps at the same time. We asked to wait a few minutes before ordering entrees. Hour later she comes back to tell us kitchen is closing in 30 minutes so if we want entree's need to order. We were ready to order 30-45 minutes earlier. Very disappointed with the experience at a "high end" place.

"It wasn't just bad service like you get sometimes these were kids that did not seem to know how to communicate face to face with people"

So they serviced you yet you didn't approve of the way they talked to you?

Weird dude. Just weird. Probably best you stay home next time

In my town there's an Asian Fusion restaurant owned by a couple and the wife is the primary waiter.

She's the best

Often times, the attitude of the server is dictated by the attitude of the customer.

Often times, when the attitude of the server is dictated by the attitude of the customer, the server should be fired.

Since Covid the standard at your mid range restaurants (Buffalo Wild Wings, Chili's, Applebees, etc) is absolute shite. Floors are dirty, servers seem to give zero fricks, food comes out slow and out of order.

No one ever went into these places expecting top quality food and service, but fast, efficient and friendly shouldn't be too high of a bar to clear.

Mid tier restaurants/sports bars are pretty much dead these days, and that's sad because that industry gave decent paying jobs to a lot of people that were down on their luck or starting out.

If we could just get rid of tipping...they aren't working as if they earned a tip so they don't deserve one. So as the consumer we should stop giving them. The restaurant has to make up the difference to give them minimum wage.

Maybe that will give them the kick in the arse they need to try harder.

And EVERY SINGLE PERSON needs to custom tip 0% when dumbasses like AAA places that have never taken tips are now presenting tipping screens at checkout. Like no....absolutely not.
