Judging by your responses ITT, I take it you’re a used car salesman.

Stop defending your slimy peers.

I agree somewhat but at a certain point you can't be the master of every single domain in modern life and do every single thing ever all by yourself. You have to seek the help of others and it helps when others aren't scumbags.

Then if you are buying an "as is" used car take it to a mechanic to have it inspected before buying.

I had a friend buy a car from a used car lot. I brought him so he could sign the paperwork and drive the car home. The salesman kept saying that the car was being sold as is and said it so many times that a big red flag popped up. Suggested to my friend that he should either not buy it or have my cousin who is a mechanic come check it out later that day. Friend said no....

Two days after buying it the car wouldn't start. My cousin came and checked it out and the car was so fricked that it would have cost waaaaaaaay more than the car was worth to fix it.

People everywhere seem to be getting fed up with bullshite.

And dealerships are the fricking worst.

My last truck was purchased as Certified PreOwned. The dealership made a huge deal out of this when I bought it, because it meant the truck went through some 250 point inspection which included removing any aftermarket parts and replacing them with OEM.

Two days after bringing the truck home, the battery dies. Not a huge deal, but I'm now out $200 for a battery that was supposed to have been tested. I contacted my salesman, who speaks to the service department manager, who informs me that its a wear and tear issue and that they can't help me.

Well I blast them on Facebook and Google reviews. My terrible reviews must have caught the eye of someone in charge because a few days later the salesman calls and asks if I can take the reviews down if they pay for the battery.

Months later, the truck develops an exhaust leak. I take it to the dealership, and it turns out that their highly touted Certified PreOwned vehicle with the much vaunted 250 point inspection had aftermarket shorty headers on it, which no one noticed.

It was a huge battle with the service department until they finally relented at agreed to remove the faulty headers and replaced them with OEM exhaust manifolds. They held onto the truck for 2 months to do this. So it was another huge battle to get a loaner vehicle from them.

You'd think that would be the end of the story, but it isn't. A day after bringing the truck home there was a distinct rattle.

The truck is brought back to the dealership, and later in the day I'm told they couldn't replicate the issue.

I force the service manager to take a ride with me. Truck is rattling like hell. I say to him "tell me how your techs couldn't hear that? I expect this to be fixed today."

Turns out when they replaced the headers, they didn't do their due diligence in tightening things back up. They found sway bar bushing, sway bar links, upper control arms, steering drive shaft loose. Just terrible workmanship all around.

TLDR: Dealerships and their service deparments suck.

No. I just know how it works. And since I’m familiar with cars having restored a few, raced a few, and worked on my own stuff, am familiar with what to look for and what screams walk away.

And you will get fu__ed just as easily and fast with a private party sale. So it’s just not car dealers.

Moral of the story is… if it basically screams buyer beware.. well.. beware.

These cars are traded in and the person doesn’t disclose to the dealership that he just poured a quart of some block sealer in the engine to stop the engine from pushing out the coolant due to a bad head gasket… they have a pound of weights on a rim to hide that it’s warped… that the tires were just rotated to mask the front end wearing the tires bad on the inside. You got to either find it, send someone who will, or bite the bullet and buy a warranty.

How did you not realize this on the test drive before handing over the money?

The noises did not come up until going over 50 mph. My mistake for not putting it on the interstate during the test drive.

The rest of the story...

KSL news

quote:

Slade said Murray came in saying he had $4,000 and wanted to buy a car. Slade said they had an older Subaru Outback wagon that came in on a trade that they told him would work.

"We even make the document hot pink so they truly understand this is a vehicle that is 'as-is.' It hasn't been inspected. But if it fits your budget, we will let you take it," Slade said.

"Several hours later he came in very emotionally charged and upset and wanted to have his money back immediately. My finance manager tried to calm him down, 'Let's figure this out. We have plenty of solutions. We can give you your money back. We can find you another car, talk about the repairs that might be needed."

quote:

Slade said they couldn't immediately give him his $4,000 back. They had put it in a safe and didn't have immediate access. Slade said that didn't sit well with Murray.

"He said if you don't give me my money back right now, I'm going to drive this car right through the front door. 'You don't need to do that,' tried to calm him down again, but there was no talking him off the ledge per se," said Slade.

"The finance manager was like, 'Hey, I can't calm this guy down. He's heading out to the car. He's threatening to do this.' We rallied everybody in the dealership to clear the area."

Slade said Murray then parked his car outside the front doors and revved his engine before smashing through the doors.

He should've done it at night and reported the car stolen at 6am.

I mean, unless the brakes are what was faulty, the car seems to be functioning quite well.

I am curious about the response to this as opposed to United Healthcare. In both instances scum bags are (allegedly) purposely fricking you. In this case its your job to be a mechanic on the lot or youre just shite out of luck.

So now he still has the shite car now damaged
Will have to pay the dealer for damages
And may go to jail
Good plan

You don't know the calculus that led to the guy doing this. It could have been totally rational. He's already been relegated to driving a used car; how great could his life be? Maybe he's basically living the life of Al Bundy, minus the unrealistically hot TV wife. Maybe he's on the hook for some BS alimony payment or something. Maybe he's accomplished everything he wants to in life.

I have a pretty good life. I don't buy used cars. Really, I have everything I want. But I'm also almost 50. There are definitely times when I've thought, "how much would I actually miss out on if I really went 'Falling Down' on this a-hole?". It's less and less every year, and as people become untethered from any kind of ethical system, and as their lives get shittier, you're going to see more of this and it's not as irrational as you suggest.
