Unpopular opinion incoming..

You are correct. Legally and technically speaking, the St. George area has never been a part of Baton Rouge proper. However, it is a very large portion of the metro BR area, which many people consider Baton Rouge as part of their day-to-day lives. This is where the 'BRexit'/division/split idea stems from. I have only been in BR since 2009, but this rings true to me as well. I can fully understand why many people see this as divisive and tearing the city apart and why it's a strong narrative to many.

In the end only the legality of it matters. So St. George wins. Ideally in 10 years both St. George and BR are better off having gone through this.. ripping off the band-aid for BR, in a sense. I wish BR would've annexed all of these unincorporated areas long ago to avoid such a scenario, but here we are. I live in what's now going to be St. George so my family and I have to decide if we want to live here or in BR, or if it really even matters all that much.

As I said in an earlier thread, you can pretend the area was in BR all you want but it was NEVER in BR, nor would BR have annexed the residential areas for a variety of reasons including financial and legal.

If BR wasn’t going to annex the area, then how the frick is the area “leaving” by incorporating themselves?

I'm not arguing that it was.

But when people asked you where you're from, did you answer "just outside of Baton Rouge" or "Baton Rouge"? How about when "Callin' Baton Rouge" is playing while tailgating or during a game, did you feel out of place?

The answers there are obvious. Sure nobody is actually leaving BR because they aren't IN BR, but culturally and from a community standpoint the St. George area has been seen as Baton Rouge anyway.

The EBR online map is hard to follow but did city cut off sections when annexing Siegan shopping area?

Lowe’s, Kohl’s, and the Tuscany Villas seem like they are boxed out.

They is also some weirdness around Mall of La with some boxed out including apartments East of it. It almost looks like not all of mall of La annexed but effectively have drawn a wall stopping anyone else from being able to. Online map there looks strange weaving around so much around mall it’s hard to follow.

A lot of that was by design, I believe.

It was a mix of bringing in income to BR and denying income to St George if an area couldn’t be annexed for some reason.

Another Fact. Sales tax revenue generated in the SG area that they will retain only amounts to 5-7% of the total revenue of the City-Parish Government.

Also, the city will NEVER cut the BRFD and BRPD budgets because of the St. George retaining revenue that was wrongfully used by the C-P in the General Fund.

Those neighborhoods must be contiguous with the BR CIty Limits to do so, and they need 50%+1 of the residents to petition to qualify. Not so simple.

Shouldn’t you add another another unincorporated area in EBR as one of your choices since you didn’t live in BR in the first place and know less about living in BR than living in an unincorporated area in EBR parish.

What was your reasoning to live outside of BR in first place? Maybe not on first look, but you had to have found out pretty quickly it didn’t have city taxes or services.

Take a look North of Dallas. People consider themselves part of Dallas metroplex and part of their own city (and own school districts). It’s not about being separate or enemies or acting like there is a wall between them. It’s choosing to live where it’s best for you, and for many that includes liking to be have city functions like city hall and main police station closer to them (and even though they don’t follow city boundaries exactly people definitely like having a vote and say in smaller schools districts than one stretched out over a county) while still liking they are part of something bigger.

There are parts I thought were in Dallas that aren’t, and parts I didn’t think were in Dallas that actually are. Most people think SMU as being in Dallas, but it’s in University Park which is right next to Highland Park and both enclaves inside city of Dallas. University of Texas at Dallas is in Richardson. I am setting myself up here for a joke with this crowd, but the Cowboys haven’t played home games in Dallas since early 70s and haven’t played in Dallas county since 2008. They are headquartered in Frisco,Tx. No one mandated a name change even as tax payers in local cities helped fund construction.

Again being part of a city doesn’t separate StG from rest of metroplex any more or less than before in day to day dealing with others and where to go out, eat, or worship and who to do these things with. Metro area for a while has been much more than the city of Baton Rouge than BR wants to admit. Anyone who thinks differently is just being shallow and probably being political. Both before vote & after StG and BR are in same metro area, same parish, same state, and same country. Vote just gives StG residents and BR residents a more equal representation & say over taxes collected in respective areas.

When does incorporation take place formally? Does it need to go to Legislature for approval?

-love the neighborhood
-love the house
-love the location
-price was right

Taxes had nothing to do with it.

I actually largely agree with this. I just wanted to nitpick the "we were never BR" line pushed by St.G advocates. I know why they need to push this line but it irks me that they act like there's no reason to say that they were ever a part of BR when culturally and communally they were/are.

And I want to point out that, while I don't think that St.G will get what they want and i don't favor it, I do applaud the movement for being undeniably American and patriotic. This is American democracy in action and it's beautiful

Nobody said anything about the damn refinery until you did. The comments were about the EM plant off of 19. Not the refinery.

I didn't think anyone still thought it was in the city limits.
