My issue is the delays are getting damn close to making me miss connections. So if that happens and I am not on the next flight (I have heard horror stories from other passengers) then I am about to be driving that honda all over the country.
Yep. The engine overheating made me miss my connecting flight in Charlotte. And I think the reason the engines overheated was because when the plane arrived in Peoria, it sat on the tarmac with the engines running for over half an hour waiting on ground crew. I came close then to saying screw it and just rent a car to drive home.

Delta still operates the Boeing 717 which is pretty much just an MD-80 with Boeing written on the side.
The 717 was originally supposed to be the MD-95 before the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger happened.

Customs. Savannah probably had zero Customs Officers and had to call them in. Got to keep everyone on the plane with the door closed. Sucks.

If you are just cutting connections close you are doing great. On two of my last four flights I have been delayed until the next day either coming or going. It has gotten so much worse the last two years. I believe I have had more delays and spent more nights in or beside airports the last two years than the previous 20 combined.

Kid should have crapped right next to the cockpit door then pop that emergency slide and roll out like a boss.
My 5 year old niece would have done just that, and bitten one of them on the way out.

I no longer fly for business so it is just a personal flight every couple of months. And the damn flights are schedule with a 1.5 hour layover at ORD which is fine until the flight is delayed and the door closes 30 minutes before takeoff.

To be fair, it sounds like a problem with customs agency protocol, which if Federal Gov, and not Delta. IMO, if customs wants to keep you on a tarmac in Georgia for three or four days, then you knew it was a possibility when you decided to go to the Bahamas. Don't want the hassle? Easy solution. Go to Dollywood instead of that Caribbean bed of spies and foreign agents. Has anyone here heard how they talk there?
I got caught by a Hari Christna dude in the airport in Los Angelas one day back in 1971 that seemed like four days in captivity. Still have bad dreams about it when I eat too much spicy chicken for dinner. Usually, in my dream I am trying to drive my car from the backseat, while I have to use the bathroom and a Hari Crista guy is seated beside me asking for money.

If that plane came from Nassau, all Americans would have cleared Customs. You clear Customs in Nassau when heading to the States. It's possible everybody clears there I'm just not sure. Therefore, there may be more to this story.

My dad flew for Continental then United for over 20 years. He said he hated spending time just sitting on the ground and if he didn’t like it, the passengers didn’t like it. Yea they get paid by the minute once pushed back from the jetway but that doesn’t make up for sweating in a plane for hours.

Domestic flights in the USA are a shitshow
Airline frickery is far from a USA problem.
We flew to Brazil this past Christmas, flight was delayed leaving Houston for the first leg. I guess the Brazilian airline for our second leg figured we'd miss the connect so they booked us on a later flight.
We made the connection just fine. However, because we "no showed" the later flight (that we had no idea we were booked on) they cancelled our return flight without notice. Only found out because I got on to reserve seats and we no longer had a reservation.

This is a great point. I haven't flown to NAS in almost 30 years but they had US pre-clearance there. The other 2 destinations that Delta flies to from ATL are Exuma and Eleuthera, both of which are serviced with the regional carriers on RJs. Not that it should make a difference.

Sure if you ignore 717s are 20 years newer than MD-80s. 717s are fantastic planes. 0 accidents and 0 fatalities in its history.

They changed the flight times and it became a 45 minute layover. There are 2 flights a day from Chicago to our regional airport on this airline. I called and 10 pm and I got up before dawn to make the first flight. I want to go home tonight not spend the night in Chicago.

What a fricking shitshow. This is my nightmare as an airline captain and I pray I’m never put in this situation.
Savanna has about 15 gates/jet bridges and I assume they were all full from regular scheduled flights plus the planes that diverted there. That being said, there are air stairs that they can tow to the airplane to offload passengers. So it’s not the case that they couldn’t offload passengers, they just wouldn’t allow it because of Customs which is complete bureaucratic bullshite.
I hope I’m never put in this situation because my ability to tolerate incompetence and bureaucratic bullshite is very low. I’d have probably lost my shite on the airport authorities and personnel and lost my job.
I’m not gonna pass judgment on the captain or flight crew because I don’t have all off the details, but I can’t imagine a scenario where I would allow the airport authorities to keep the passengers on my airplane for 6 hours in those conditions. I’m assuming the APU was running the whole time supplying A/C because it would have been unbearable otherwise.
