My dad's unit was on the Japan invasion force list.
I have seen estimates run as high as 250,000 US casualties if we would have invaded Japan.
With the war in Europe over, the vast majority of US citizens wanted the killing US soldiers to stop ... the bombs allow that happen.

There and Okinawa. It would have been bloody for sure. The 2 nukes and LeMay’s fire bombing campaign always catch criticism, but it’s not like we had tons of options. This should be a cautionary tale on what can happen when a population views their leader as infallible.

People that like to say the Soviets had a hand in forcing surrender don't get that up until the end the Japanese military wanted a go.

I think it's more like the Soviet's were trying to get in on the action to get as much territory under their sway before the war ended. One of the other reasons we may have dropped the bombs was to show the soviets what we can do, and end the war before they can scoop up more territory. I've also heard they may have know we had a working bomb before we dropped it.

We've done nothing in the past few millennia to improve medicine and wellness, information sharing and recording, agricultural production, transportation, housing and everyday living conditions. The point was, if we put as much effort into building and improving society as a whole as we put into killing others on mass scales, we’d be a better off as a civilization. And that extends outside of the US.

Hardly. Some historians may hold that opinion but far from a concensus. Hirohito wasn't so concerned about the Russians declaring war, while also being weeks or months away from actually assembling a force to actually invade Japan, as he was about the atomic weapons. From his speech accepting the Potdam Declaration:
