In an ideal world, sure. But it will happen again and probably on our soil. There are too many ppl living in this country that will try that very thing.

I just went down a rabbit hole on nukemap. It's a site showing the damage from different bombs in any particular location. Pretty scary actually.

The battle of Iwo Jima pretty much convinced them to use the atomic bomb.

The death and destruction on that island was extrapolated out in a plan for the worst in the event of an invasion of mainland Japan.

The general consensus of WWII historians is that the 2 atomic bombs were not the primary reason for the surrender of the Japanese. The primary reason was Russia entering the war against them on the 9th of August. If you look at the conventional bombings of 68 cities in Japan by the US you will see the casualties caused by the atomic bombs pales in comparison. The Japanese felt they could save more face by surrendering under the guise of a new type of warfare.

I think we’re still issuing Purple Hearts that we’re made for the Japanese mainland invasion, unless we’ve finally gone through them.

The A-bombs didn't just save hundreds of thousands of Japanese and American lives in 1945/6. They saved untold millions in the following decades by keeping the superpowers from letting any conflict get truly hot. All the surrogate wars following WW2 (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan for the Soviets) were relatively minor compared to what a full showdown between the USSR and NATO would have been. Nuclear deterrence kept things from boiling over.

I think the history of it highlights the cultural differences between us and them. They feel shame for their actions during the war (as they should) and don't resent our dropping the bomb on them.

Situations reversed, we would still be pissed at them and looking to kill everyone of them any chance we got.

I don’t think the Japanese WWII military vets, in general, were remorseful at all, except for the fact that they got their asses kicked.

Cmon, man, it's just a photo album.

Stop trying to set off the nukes cuz your wife and daughter died in a CIA mission gone bad.

That was kind of our doing. We completely tore apart their education system so it was either be shamed or be ignorant of the war.

What’s amazing is the bombs we dropped on Japan by today’s standards would be considered at best tactical nuclear bombs. The warheads we’d use on a city today dwarf the Japan bombs.

If you think the atomic bombs were the primary reason just do a little research. The Soviets poured over 1.5 million soldiers (10 times what landed during the D-Day invasion) into Manchuria and just flat out rolled over the Japanese Arny defenses there. Anyone that thinks this wasn't a major factor if not THE factor for surrender is crazy. The amount of damage Little Boy and Fat Man did are still significantly less than what we had done with the conventional bombing of Japanese cities to that point in the Summer of '45.

Japan still attempts to deny/ downplay their "Rape of Nanking" & they are having a huge feud with S Korea over WW2 abuses ( slavery/ sex slaves) they won't fully own up to.

You're comparing facts in a vacuum. The US had in recent days totally destroyed two cities and firebombed Tokyo. On top of taking Japanese homeland territory in Iwo Jima and Okinawa

The Soviet invasion was probably a factor but did not directly threaten the Japanese Islands
