An Ethiopian Airlines jet has crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa, killing all on board, the airline says. It said 149 passengers and eight crew members were believed to be on flight ET302 from the Ethiopian capital to Nairobi in Kenya. The airline added that there were 33 different nationalities on board. The crash happened at 08.44 local time, six minutes after the months-old Boeing 737 Max-8 took off. It is not yet clear what caused the accident.

Why does this matter? It’s a sad story to all of us no matter the background of the dead.

A plane crash is probably my number one irrational fear

Going to jump out on a limb here and say they need to ground this aircraft until the issue is resolved.

Sunday's crash, however, had "no fluctuations and all of the sudden transmission" ceased, he said. "That transmission ceasing indicates catastrophic failure in air."

Terrorist attack?

This could be because of anything. Pilot error, terrorism, shoddy maintenance....

If it's 737 Max, it isn't so irrational...

Terrorism I can accept.

The rest aren’t so plausible. It’s a brand new plane. And Ethiopian airlines has one of the best fleets and pilots.

Article I read said it had unstable vertical speed, which sounds kind of familiar.

Same here.

I look at it like this;
The odds it happens to me are small, but the odds that it happens to someone are 100%.

I don't worry about takeoff or landing, but cruising at 33k freaks me out a bit. Just the idea of falling out of the sky at that height and having to deal with it for a few minutes is scary as hell

Small planes don't really bother me as much.

Takeoff and landing are when the vast majority of crashes occur, so if you’re cruising that’s when you order a bunch of in-flight alcohol to prepare for the landing.

I use the same logic when I buy lottery tickets.

But it's over quickly. Unlike falling from 30,000 feet.

I don't think you realize just how many things have to be fixed once an aircraft is accepted. It can be pretty bad.

I think the rapid change in altitude causes most people to pass out if the plane essentially falls out of the sky, no ?

At times. There's been plenty of cases of people surviving until they hit though.
