YORK, Pa. — The numbers are staggering: Seventy-one percent of young people are ineligible to join the military, according to 2017 Pentagon data. The reasons: obesity, no high school diploma or a criminal record.

You can get plenty of jobs being obese and having a record

According to one report, 52 percent of employers in Pennsylvania find it challenging to hire people with adequate skills, training or education.

That's because companies are unwilling to train.

As a gen x’r I don’t think I will ever have to worry about losing my job in the traditional work place to millennials. However, millennials will develop some kind of way to make money in a non traditional sense.

Well crime is down compared to the past and education rates are higher

So I am guessing this number isn’t much higher than past generations assuming entrance guidelines were the same

Yep. One of the biggest problems in today's job market. So many companies want people that come in and hit the ground running on day one.

I don’t like the fact that he is advocating for the state (PA) to do some something about this as it should be the parents responsibility, but I’m finding it hard to disagree with his goals and aims.

I cannot agree more with statement. Teaching kids something as simple as manners and respectfulness should be stressed. But it’s not

I'd assume its referring more to a lifelong career path as opposed to just finding a job because you're definitely right about that.

Yep, they want public schools and the American tax payer to pay for their training. They ca just reap the benefits of it all.

As a millennial (34 - barely) in the traditional workplace, in a job that has no formal training, yet is highly specialized, I doubt I'll ever have to worry about losing my job to them either.

Companies would be surprised at how many quality employees they could hire if they were willing to train new hires instead of relying on universities to act as job training centers.

Or they advertise for an entry level position, which would have about entry level pay, but require 3+ years experience.

Being obese is keeping people from a very miniscule amount of jobs.

You can work in plants, finance, maritime, construction, offshore, etc.

The 71% is misleading. You become part of that 71% if you're ineligible for some jobs but are capable for plenty of others
