These scammers prey upon the elderly who are often lonely and make for easy, trusting targets.

I wouldn’t bat an eye if those who were caught received medieval style punishment.

Scammers must be making a killing. Just in the sheer number of spam calls I get. Fake IRS calls are the worst. At least I know instantly which calls are junk when an Indian speaking accent asks for me by my middle name and not my first name.

My 80+ years old FIL was scammed for about $15k. The scammers learned enough about him and grandkids from Facebook, and used those details to threaten to gut one of the grandkids. The really weird part was the explicit instructions were to purchase 10 copies of a specific book, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, wrap 15 $100 bills in aluminum foil, insert into the middle of each book, and send via overnight FedEx to a specific address.

My MIL discovered this after he'd already sent the $15k, and then they came back and wanted him to send another $10k to stop forever. That's when he finally went to the police. The house he sent the books and money to was unoccupied, of course.

This is a man with a PhD in Actuarial Mathematics, the study of risk, for banking, investment and gambling. He owns/runs a cattle and hay ranch. He was one of the organizers that helped get the Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City. He's not an unintelligent man, yet, he got scammed. We were all shocked that he, of all people, allowed himself to fall for the ruse.

“Only way this stops is for these frickers to get dragged out of their homes and beaten to death with their bodies left to rot in their doorways.”

These people rarely live in the United States and the governments where they live don’t care as long as the money is spent in their Nation’s economy.

Ahh, yes...Keanu Reeves reaching out to random elderly women because he somehow went broke.

An idiot and their money...

I am sure some SF operators would love the practice.

I’ve always believed we should send fully loaded F-15’s to these data centers that specialize in stealing from others. There aren’t enough beekeepers to eliminate them all.

They prey on the old because even if they are mostly capable they're often starting to have lapses in clarity of thought and older folks also tend to worry way too much about awful things happening.

If you look at the matrix of these scams, and the speed in which they take place, it can cause you to get to a breaking point, point break if you will, where you want to go all John Wick on their arse.

I wish I was smart enough to scam some people in Nigeria. Better than working and seemingly no consequences

Did you mean $1500?

Either way, that really sucks.
