It's starting to feel like 1986-1995 when it was like Dodge City. Except we can't find a police chief like Richard Pennington and we sure miss someone like Connick as the DA. The situation is deteriorating quickly.

Uptown may be safe compared to the rest of the city, but it is shite compared to a normal city, especially a normal city's "nicest" neighborhood. Even people on Walnut are having items stolen every day. The rest of uptown is only safer because cars cant drive down the 3rd world streets.

Just imagine the possibilities with a massive influx of right wing voters flooding New Orleans, voting out most of the politicians, outnumbering the moochers, and going super tough on crime and pro business.
The State would be changed massively for the better.
Come on over.
New Orleans' significance to the state has been decreasing for over a half century. Sorry to tell you that it is not as economically important to the state as it used to be. It's like Savannah is to Georgia, except there is no Atlanta in La to prop it up.
And why would I leave a nice place to move into a dangerous shithole? I can send my kids to public school and they can run the streets without fear of danger. But I'm supposed to pack it up and submit them to awfulness in order to "save New Orleans?"
Hmmm. No thanks, I'm good.

Genuinely curious where you’re getting this idea from?

Why not in Nola. Bring in the national guard to stand at every other corner for all I care. The cops are outnumbered and the government at all levels are against them.

I would take the La National guard here in a heartbeat

True. But that doesn't mean the state should stop caring about it. Just because it doesn't dominate the state's GDP anymore doesn't mean its failures aren't hugely embarrassing to the state of Louisiana.

WTH is going on in New Orleans?
Just had a thread deleted because some kid mentioned the answer to your question.

New Orleans was a global commercial hub from the early 1800s to roughly the 1960s. One of the most important cities in the world and nation, much less the state. One could argue that the decline began mid 1800s, but that was a gradual one with occasional renewal periods (ie early 20th century with the fruit import magnates connected to banana republics).
The concept of NO as some "cultural" town didnt come into existence until New Orleans began to be outperformed by Houston, Atlanta, Dallas in the 1950s/60s. It was a re-branding from global commercial center to a tourism town (ie 3rd world unless you are Vegas)
While some geographical considerations limited New Orleans, there is no reason it could not have competed. New Orleans (and some state) leadership simply didnt want to compete. That would have meant giving up some of their power as new faces within the political/corporate world would be required to expand.
Simply due to its larger population from the earlier, more successful days, the New Orleans metro is still pretty important, but Orleans Parish is rotting. The requirement for a city center seems to be less of a thing these days (in many places around the country).
Oil and Gas are still numero uno for Louisiana's economy. Not saying that should be the case. Just that it is. New Orleans has very little to do with that anymore. It has the name recogntion but that's it.
The vaunted "culture" has become a laughable parody of itself. A caricature that exists and becomes more absurd as it tries to force the idea that it matters any more. It doesnt.
Ask someone in outlying parishes of the metro area if they give a shite about what's happening in New Orleans anymore. 9 out of 10 times, they'll say "No." GO outside that perimeter in Louisiana and it will be 10 out of 10.
Working outside the city limits but within the metro has become more possible and is becoming more regular as any business with more than 2 brain cells exits Orleans for surrounding areas.
Even if we suddenly had better leadership in the city and state, too many successful Southern cities/metros have exploded for NOLA to even have a chance at catching up. Charlotte, Nashville, Chattanooga, Tampa, Austin, Huntsville, Orlando, Jacksonville, at least 6 or 7 other places in TX.
NO still has the brand recognition in Louisiana, but the power is gone and the long term trend is very clear.
Read about and look at pics of New Orleans from the 1950s and then look at the 1970s. A different world. The spiral has quickened and continues to do so. The brief post-K period, roughly 2008-2015, is an exception, but the larger trend returned with vengeance. Any long term look at New Orleans' economic/fiscal/cultural importance is bleak circa 2022.

Living in BR and frequenting NOLA often is the reason my gf and I don't justify nice designer watches, jewelry, purses. You can't even leave Lauberge without getting robbed let alone walk around Nola with $3k on your shoulder/wrist

Agreed and this speaks to some of my posts in this thread.
Nola needs massive changea internally for sure, but also needs investment from outside to pay for fixing the crumbling shithole. The competition has blown by nola over the past few decades and the south has had a bit of a renaissance with places like Nashville, Atlanta, Texas, Charlotte, etc absolutely exploding in the past 15-20 years. New Orleans missed out on that renaissance. Why would any outside company put down roots and investment in new orleans when there's at least 25 other cities in the south that beat it in almost every metric?

There’s really no good solution. People don’t want to move to a place with our crime to improve it, but the place won’t improve without those people moving here to change it.
I don’t know what the answer is, but something has to change. NOLA and the state are in real real trouble if something doesn’t.

New Orleans is basically Savannah with sports teams (with the mercy of the Bensons)
That’s about as good as it’ll be in our lifetimes. Go look at the public companies list in New Orleans v other similarly sized cities. The City is closer to competing with Baton Rouge or Lafayette than Charlotte or Nashville, or even San Antonio.

yea. the only people mad about this are those with delusional expectations
Nola was never going to be more than a boutique tourism city. I've said that for years and it's still 100% accurate

Well said. The FAA listed top 50 airports with delayed 5G rollout. MSY nowhere to be found.
Once Gayle passes, Saints and Pels will not be feasible as the major sports don’t need 3rd world city.

Why do New Orleans topics on here reach multiple pages? Just stop talking about it. We don't talk about your problems (I'm sure there are plenty). Just do us a favor and ignore the city. It clutters the board. Too bad moderators don't whack them immediately.

Had a lot of fun days/nights/weekends in NOLA in the years following Katrina, don't think I even want to visit right now.

You wrote a nice essay there, but I have to disagree with you on this part. I don't feel like spelling out why you are wrong so let's see if others help out.
