I mean seriously, who the frick thinks this is some great work of art?

I am ignorant on art, but that is actually one of the pieces I really like. I don't know why. I guess I like the colors and how the finished product had a lot of "fate" to it but somehow still looks intentional and put together. It will never be recreated.

What does this even mean?

Can ignorant people not appreciate art? Does it take an intellectual to appreciate Pollock or Rothko's art? Why does one have to be educated on art to discern if it's appealing or not?

Can an uneducated person look at the statue of David and appreciate it's beauty?

Are you asking those questions seriously?

There is a lot to know about art, obviously. It's taught in HS, college, and you can get a degree in it. Saying I am ignorant on art means I don't know anything about the study, but I can still like it.

Does it confuse you when someone says they don't know shite about wine, but that silver oak is really tasty?

Haha GAY!!! It's the penis. That's what your responses have been like. It's easier to ridicule than to try and understand.

the fact it was sculpted out of marble is incredible.

Yawn. You know how many craftsmen sculpted out of marble in his time? A lot but none got as famous as him. why? Because the others didn't get to paint the Sistine chapel?

Is this Renaissance or modern? It's marble.

Yep, the same person did this:

If so, these are not the talentless hacks of modern art that I despise.

So there are some Modern artist you like then? Didn't seem like it.

Believe it or not, I despise those douchebags too because they aren't original. However, the ones you were ridiculing were. But you can't judge all as talentless.

That's art to some. Don't you think his penis is better than David's?

BTW Paige, I'm buying this Mauro Perucchetti piece for your birthday:

Well no shite Sherlock. I'm not talking about art history or art lessons, I'm talking about viewing art.

I'm not an art history expert either, but I can certainly look at a piece of art and ascertain if the artist is talented and the piece is a great work of art. Likewise, I think I can look at something and ascertain that the artist is not very talented, but maybe creative (Pollock) and the art is not so exceptional.

I think most people can look at art and see this. Basically, if I look at a piece of art and think "Meh, anybody can do that," I'm not impressed.

I'm not just talking art history, Watson.

Nascar. Driving in a circle. Meh, I can do that. No talent.

Chess. Moving little pieces around a board trying to attack the tall one. Meh, I can do that no talent.

Soccer. Kicking a ball around and trying to get it in a giant net. Meh, I can do that. No talent.

You see my point? People day this about these things, because they don't know everything that goes into those crafts. That's you with painting. That's me with painting. I just look at them and decide if I like it. I'm not mad that someone spent $200 million on a painting anymore than I am mad that Christian Rinaldo makes $200 million just for kicking a ball around a field.

Yes, the ones who are apparently talented and can do what few can do. Even if I don't find a piece of art appealing, I can still appreciate the uniqueness and unmistakable talent required to make it.

I'm just not impressed or admire art that basically any artist can do, which is basically most modern abstract art.

What's so great about this? Couldn't pretty much any artist do this?

Why do we still represent millions as $500M instead of $500MM?

You have to see it in person. The Rothko Chapel in Houston is great place to do so. But to appreciate modern art you have to have a knowledge of art history and a knowledge of the cultural context the work was created in. Modern art is not about the visceral response of looking at the art like it is with a Michelangelo or a David. And that is what opens modern art up to easy ridicule. Knowledge is power when it comes to modern art.

You sound just like the people Wolfe ridiculed in his book about modern art.

And you denying that you're not a pretentious art snob is laughable.

What's so great about Sgt Peppers album? Or Led Zeppelin IV? Can't about any musician play that?

I'm not a fan of Pollock or Rothko but put it in context and the time and again, who he knew and the circle of people he ran with, it did break ground. Rothko, i believe was doing just what your posting about. Just seeing how far he could take it. He was emulating the European surrealism(google Rothko Surrealism) for a while and got disenchanted with the art world and life and said frick it, take this. The canvases are huge and he wants you to loose yourself into the paintings or colors to see if it can draw anything out of you. View up close, far away, what's your thoughts. All that pretentious shite you've been spewing.

ironically, he became that guy who got pissy about people buying his art because it was trendy more than the reason he wanted them to experience it.

In Houston there is the Rothko chapel with large dark paintings. Just for meditation. I suppose it's cool for some for me with was, "Hmmmm. ok."

It seems fruitless to call anyone who can appreciate seeing something in person and enjoying it more pretentious just because you don't fell the same way.

Going to an LSU football game evokes different feelings than watching it on TV, right?

Great? Meh. Very important work of art? Absolutely.

BTW, I'd rather have that hanging in my living room that the Statue of David.
