I just don't get abstract art. A bunch of shapes, colors and splatters. It means nothing. It's fricking stupid.

You sound like one of those pretentious assholes in an art gallery trying to explain bad art. "The shapes represent the dichotomy between man and nature."

Get the frick outta here with that bullshite.

Art is the paintings and sculptures by Michelangelo, DaVinci and other talented artists.

Yes, I did. It looked similar to this.

What does it say to you? How do the colors and shapes affect you?

It's really not impressive looking. Any painting that could reasonably look like a 10yr olds is not a great accomplishment.

If that's true then where's your 500 million?

Modern artists can draw and paint realistic images. But realism was passe by the late 1800's in terms of artistic expression. What about Van Gogh, is he an artist? What about Picasso?

Hold on, you're calling me pretentious because I think the works of Michelangelo and DaVinci are true works of art?

I don't think you know what pretentious means dumbass.

Thinking that you're qualified to be the one person who can define what "true art" is and isn't is the definition of being a pretentious a-hole.

Bailey the Monkey's Dreams of a Rainforest

Jackson Pollock's No. 5

The above left is a painting done by a monkey, named Bailey, auctioned off to help fund the wildlife preservation center where he lives. The above right is No. 5 by Jackson Pollock, sold for 140 million dollars. Pollock was known for splattering canvas with paint and gaining enormous profit. While Pollock's artwork can never be exactly replicated due the sheer randomness of where the paint flies, his style and methods are basic and are easily copied by children and primates. In fact, this is a website that you can create your own Pollock. LINK

No, I'm calling you pretentious b/c you are acting all high and mighty by shitting a type of art you personally don't like and openly admit to not understanding while holding up a different kind of art you do like as actual "true art". In doing so you are holding yourself up as more enlightened on the subject than those who do appreciate and value that type of art. That's being a pretentious a-hole good sir.

Have you ever seen a quiz titled: "DaVinci Painting or Child's Artwork?"

If it's really that simple then why haven't you gotten in on this? Where's your $500 million?

Is Jackson Pollock the Worst Artist of All Time?
quote:

That is to say, not even the most drugged-out, politically motivated abstract art enthusiast can pretend that there's anything to 'get'. This is because, thank God, Jackson Pollock's 'patented technique' of heaving blobs of paint at a roll of paper on the floor was photo-documented.

This left no room for Freudo-Marxo-Gay-Luddite art critics to make up stories about Pollock living in an abandoned lighthouse for 7 years, painting subliminal sub-paintings below his eventual 'textural' exterior to keep amateur eyes away. No. It was just a middle aged alcoholic throwing paint on the floor.

Because I don't know any pretentious morons except you who would pay me to drip and splatter paint on a canvas.

My hypothesis thus far is that the abstract art community - being repressed, unhealthy emotional cripples - simply grew excited watching Pollock's highly physical (and minimally mental) painting method. You see, after years of cognitive dissonance, abstract artists increasingly reject anything relating to realism, however they still suffer from the same low IQs and physical impulsiveness as the average jock. Here are people who want more badly than anything to chase an inflatable ball around like their fellow idiots who were never sucked into the painful delusion of deepness. And here was a man they could watch move around and 'do stuff', yet who was making a statement against physical reality by painting things indecipherable to living creatures and forensic scientists alike. Wow! Was it like a sneaky way to own boring sports memorobilia without being disowned by your suicidal life partner?

so to prove you weren't acting like a pretentious a-hole you link a blog post from a completely random person on the internet who also acts like a pretentious a-hole?

Do you really think people pay that ridiculous amount of money for a Pollock painting because it's a beautiful piece of art?

No. It's an investment for pretentious wealthy people to say, "I own a Pollock."

I think the "Dogs Playing Poker" is a better piece of art than any Pollock.

Dude, can you honestly look at his art and tell me what it represents? Be honest, is his art that special or beautiful compared to what most normal people appreciate as art?

I'm just being honest here, his art is crap.

If I'm wrong about it, please explain why it's so special and what I'm missing.

Dude blew 10% of his net worth on those paintings... if i am spending that much of my fortune it would be something much more enjoyable than some paint.
