They aren't interacting and caring for other patients like healthcare workers are.

One nurse could be assigned 6 patients that shift to care for. Discharges a few of those and admits a few. So that one nurse could have cared for 10 different people.

Respiratory therapist could have given SVN treatments to 15 different people during their shift.

Phlebotomist could have drawn blood on 40 people during her shift.

A patient who has not had a flu shot could be in the waiting room before Surgery and be around 40 people, they could be around 8 patients after surgery in the PACU, they could go by another 3 patients as they are wheeled to their car. A family member with the flu could be around 200 people in the cafeteria. When half the population has not had a flu shot everybody is around everybody.

I understand being required to have a flu shot when caring for pts that are susceptible to infections such as pts on immunosuppressant drugs but for most healthcare workers it is a moot point.

That is where herd immunity comes in.

Reduce the chance as much as possible.

Flu shots only decrease relative risk by 50%.

Basically, your chance of getting the flu decreases from 2in100 to 1in100.

They are not the same as historical vaccines. The flu shot has no chance to completely obliterate the infection like the polio vaccine did.
Flu Shots provide a very minimal benefit compared to the cost to administer them to a population of millions.

They are a pharmaceutical scam and a giant waste of money.

And all it's doing is creating a super virus that will wipe us all from the face of the earth. The H5N1 will look like a common cold.

My wife is has been a RN for over 15 years. Almost every hospital she worked at, it is mandatory. One of the hospitals she worked at in California gave them the option to get the flu shot or wear a mask every day at work.

Suck it up. As far as I know, it's still mandatory in the military, it was during my 20 years.

At the end of the day, you control what you can control. You don’t know who might come in each day to visit patients, but you do know who will be there to work everyday.

Have gotten one every year for the past 8 years and haven't gotten the flu either.

You're welcome.

Most hospitals that require their workers to have a flu shot make it so simple. The facility will have a supply of flu shots and they will administer the shots to all of their employees. This just seems like a money making scam with kickbacks. Bunch of BS.

But now a flu shot, well, a waiver for religion is OK?

That tells you immediately that the medical community knows the flu shot is not effective.

Flu shot is a scam and making it mandatory is going to get shot down in court.

Huh?

Aluminum foil hat much?

And do me a favor. When you get the flu, don't go to work to impress the boss how great you are for coming in sick. Don't go anywhere. Keep your damn nastiness at home with you.

The three-judge panel wrote that the hospital’s policy of allowing religious or medical exemptions to the flu shot requirement “unconstitutionally discriminated against” plaintiff June Valent by rejecting her refusal to be vaccinated for secular reasons

Here is the more important take away given that this New Jersey appellate review was about unemployment compensation benefits that the hospital challenged:
quote:

By exempting employees who can produce religion-based documentation, the employer's flu vaccination policy is clearly not exclusively driven by health-related concerns. The Board cannot therefore accept the policy as a proper basis to find appellant committed an act of insubordination of sufficient magnitude to render her disqualified for unemployment compensation benefits under N.J.S.A. 43:21-5(b).

Also, let's not overlook that the person agreed to abide by the requirements for the religious-exemption, which was to wear a mask at work.

quote:

CDC sponsored study published last year showed that flu vaccinations among healthcare workers offer no evidence of protection to the patients under their care

Funny:
quote:

CDC, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) recommend that all U.S. health care workers get vaccinated annually against influenza.

quote:

The findings of a recent CDC review of related published literature indicate that influenza vaccination of health care personnel can enhance patient safety.

He said the union does intend to fight any terminations for a policy it says is unnecessary, intrusive and may not even be effective. “The flu shot isn’t a be-all, end-all,” he said. “It only has certain efficacy.”

What an asinine thing to say from a union representing health care employees. Not getting the flu shot while working in a hospital setting is demonstrably negligent.

The flu shot is a guess. Out of millions of strains of the flu, they guess which strain might be problematic for the year. The flu shot will cover 3 or 4 strains. If their guess is wrong, then every shot will be unnecessary.
Many people will get the flu shot, and still get the flu.
Many people will not get the flu shot and will get the flu.
Many people will get the flu shot, and will not get the flu.
Many people will not get the flu shot and get the flu.

A person should have the freedom to determine what is best for their body. If a person has taken flu shots in the past, but they still got the flu, why should they have to take the flu shot?
The doctors are guessing. You are taking a flu shot based on a guess. If you want the shot, then get it. remember, you are taking it on a guess. Recently, these guesses have been incorrect more often than not.
typically, I have gotten sick after taking the flu shot. I stopped taking the flu shot and have not gotten as sick. For me, flu shots have caused a sickness. They need to evaluate each individual before making a blanket requirement that may not be good for all. Each person reacts differently to medicine. That is not a guess.

I had a very bad reaction to a flu shot almost 20 yrs ago, and no amount of $$ or job could get me to put that poison into my body again.. So for me, the choice would be easy: Bye-bye company... And though i’m not a litigious person and have never sued anyone in my life— they could expect to see me in court, for forcing me into such a ****ed-up choice.

Well if you had a bad reaction....then you could easily obtain a medical exemption from your doctor and this wouldn’t pertain to you.

yes they will. having a religious exemption is proof the company does not have confidence in the flu shot, otherwise there would be no waiver.
