DULUTH, MN (KBJR/CNN) - For dozens of employees at Essentia Health, Monday meant coming to work not knowing whether they would make it to Tuesday. All because of the flu shot. “Purely voluntary or more education doesn’t get you those high levels of immunization compliance,” said Dr. Rajesh Prabhu, the company’s chief of patient quality and safety. Prabhu said it was essential that he take a mandatory approach. Since September, Essentia has told employees, volunteers, students and vendors that they have three options: get the flu shot, get an approved religious or medical exemption, or leave Essentia.

So far, he said 99.5 percent of employees have chosen the first two options. But 50 or so have been terminated, with more left waiting to hear back on their exemptions. Minnesota Nurses Association Duluth Chair Steve Strand said with so many employees in that limbo, his union doesn’t know how many members have lost their jobs just yet. “We believe that they will be denying some of those, and then those individuals may end up terminated, also,” Strand said. He said the union does intend to fight any terminations for a policy it says is unnecessary, intrusive and may not even be effective. “The flu shot isn’t a be-all, end-all,” he said. “It only has certain efficacy.”

Good. If you're going to put patients at risk you don't deserve to work in healthcare

My Fianceé works in a dialysis clinic and getting a shot was mandatory. Try to keep old people from catching it and they don’t take their medicine, much less, get a flu shot.

Legal action coming and the company is going to lose. The only one that ends up fired is this idiot: Dr. Rajesh Prabhu

Well...they should have just gotten the shot.

Not anything new. Many hospitals are doing the same thing. I worked as a registry nurse at a hospital that did the same thing. If you couldn't get a medical or religious exemption and didn't get the shot...you lost your job.

I would refuse one too. Companies are low key planting tracking devices in employees under the guise of flu shots. No thank you, sir. I’d try my hand at employment somewhere else.

Why anyone puts that poison in their body is beyond me.

There are very rare side effects to the vaccine, and you are potentially preventing someone for whom the flu is a far more serious disease from catching the virus.

It’s a no-brainer.

Can anyone imagine your surgeon coming to you and saying 'my religion doesn't allow me to wash up before surgery, let me go take a dump and then we'll go ahead and cut you open' ?

What's that you say, it's dirty and dangerous? Yes, I agree.

But now a flu shot, well, a waiver for religion is OK?

That tells you immediately that the medical community knows the flu shot is not effective.

Flu shot is a scam and making it mandatory is going to get shot down in court.

Also...if you get the flu by the time you start having symptoms you could have already spread the flu to your patients.

I work at a large healthcare system and it’s not mandatory but it’s certainly frowned upon to refuse it. However, my wife works at a private outpatient surgery center with all private or cash paying patients and its only offered but not required. Seems to me that the rates of reimbursement for Medicare are higher if a certain percentage of employees are given the flu shot.

yes they will. having a religious exemption is proof the company does not have confidence in the flu shot, otherwise there would be no waiver.

Mother of God. That is the dumbest thing Scruffy has ever read.
