Good Lord, if you’re this lost at figuring out towing capacity, then you would be better off just asking the salesman at the dealership.

They’ll lie about anything to sell you a truck, and maybe that’s what you need.

3/4 ton gasoline trucks ain’t what you want. Pulling something heavy with 3/4 gas truck will get you about 1/3rd the fuel economy of a diesel

My experience towing the same 35ft camper with gas and diesel 1 tons for long distances was about 8 to 11mpg. If he’s already paying gas prices with a 1/2 ton, and the price difference between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton isn’t much, it’s absolutely reasonable to pay only the minor increase in price for substantial improvements in comfort and safety towing with the heavier truck without paying an additional $10k for diesel, not to mention the costs to repair the diesel.

When you can replace an entire gas engine for less than a fuel system on the diesel, you have to specifically need or just want the diesel because it’s not necessarily going to be the economical choice.

Let’s start with Ram 1500… They brag about 11K+ capabilities.

I’m sure you’ve realized this by now but you need the 3.92 rear end to unlock the higher towing capacity of the Ram. So in your search you can rule out any 3.21 geared Ram.

Over-used bullshite cliche

I mean, you don’t. I can put the trailer brakes sensitive enough where the trailer will stop the truck. It’s also got a 430 rear end. I was looking test drove it and the 5.0 with a 10 speed, and the 5.7 was clearly better. Even going up hills, the truck doesn’t care about that weight. Now, 7k +, you can tell it’s back there, but mostly from suspension.

Yeah…a 3/4 ton diesel would be great, but I couldn’t justify the cost up front or repairs.

Just a thought…..we pull our travel trailer with a 2000 Ford Excursion 6.8L V10 4x2

10,000 lbs towing and I have rear air bags. Our camper is 8,000 dry so we probably over 10k. Flat ground is fine. Mountains are a no go but a 6k boat absolutely.

If your boat is 5500 look at an old Excursion for less than 10k and just use it to pull boat and mess around on weekends

You don’t “not feel” getting 4400+6500(?)lbs moving down the road when the baseline 6500lbs. That’s 67% more weight, not including increased drag at highway speeds.

If you really didn’t feel it, you would have the same MPGs towing vs not.

Had a 2017 F-150 Ecoboost w Max Tow Package. Towing capacity was stated at a little over 12K pounds. What I discovered is that capacity is based on using a weight distribution hitch. Crawl under there and look at your receiver - it’ll have two towing max capacities. One without weight distribution hitch and one with.

Bought a $450 Curt WD hitch and it was night and day. Pulled a 20 foot trailer w my tractor at around 11,200 pounds total weight - no problem at all. Truck had an electric brake controller and trailer had electric brakes. Without the braking assist I would’ve had real problems trying to stop that load in a hurry.

Pulled tractor one time without WD hitch and it was damn near terrifying. Never got over 40 mph and had greatly reduced control of the vehicle.

Ah, I think the new style is decent looking, at least in black with the Pro4x style.

It’s very disappointing on fuel mileage. I was expecting better than 13/19 out of the diesel but it rides well and puts up with all my BS on hauling shite!

Buy a Dodge PowerWagon 3/4 Ton Gasser with winch from factory and 4wd with lockers, nice interior too.

Buying new is for suckers.

This used to be the case. The used car market is so inflated now, your getting “suckered” even worse on them.

In Louisiana I witnessed a guy trading in his 3 year old Tundra for a new 22 Tundra (not sure why, I guess he was just an OT baller) the KBB trade in value was 4k more than he paid for his truck new.

There was also a story, I’ll see if I can find it, about a guy who was buying new, and flipping them because the used market is so inflated.

Only problem with new market is finding what you want.

Don’t buy a crew cab and keep it 2wd. That alone will maximize your towing capacity and payload.

Just go with the F250 or GMC 2500. I have the GMC and it pulls my 36cc that weights over 15k like a feather, however, it struggled pulling a 42' out of the water but did fine down the road.

I believe the 3500 doubles that tow load.

Your link says my Colorado has 7600 lb towing capacity. Though I'm pretty sure Chevy only has it rated at 7000. Kind of surprised though that its got comparable tow capacity to most trim levels on 1/2 ton trucks

Unless that Diesel is making money there isn’t anyway you come out ahead financially. Between the extra cost of the truck, fuel, and maintenance a gas burner is cheaper. I have had both and my 6.6 gas 2500 Silverado gets 17-18 MPG on interstate. I can get 10-11 towing my 29 ft camper as well.

If you are making a habit of towing 8k+….gas 3/4 ton is a great option. You can get a half ton equipped for that, but your options are limited if you are sticking to the used market in 2022.

I wouldn’t touch a 3/4ton or 1 ton diesel unless you need 6 tons of towing or more, and doing so regularly. And I wouldn’t buy a Ford diesel at all.
