Why did they contract this out?
Tons of NOLA city employees that dont do shite all day
What are you talking about? The city desperately needs one guy to dig a hole while 4 other guys stand around and watches him. They're too busy for catch basin cleaning.
I'm pretty sure that's the state DOT ratio. I think NOLA requires 6 guys to watch, one of which must be a supervisor level employee.

someone smarter than me could probably figure out a way to use that crap to slow the coastal erosion problem

Real talk - I don’t recall the calculations 100% but they only have like 4 trucks and each basin takes a couple hours.
So...which is more expensive...purchasing more trucks or rebuilding the city each time it floods?

They used to say that but that flawed method was done away years ago

A flawed, long-standing indicator of the season's success -- weighing the trash collected from parade routes -- has rightfully been relegated to the garbage bin of Carnival history.
"We're just not going to reinforce [the notion] that trashing the city is a good thing," Nagin said. "We're going to measure the success of Mardi Gras based on the things that count: how safe it was, how commercially successful it was and how much fun people had."
We agree. Trash is, of course, tangible. But most people don't judge private parties by how much they bag afterwards. And while littering is an inevitable part of Carnival, we can find no reason to encourage it.

It's sad these things aren't kept clear. Wouldn't take much for the city to have people checking and cleaning these.

It probably could be melted down and turned into some type of mesh that would capture sediment.

The drains in Baton Rouge are no different, except dirt/mud/trash and no beads. So frustrating to see a flooded street, and then see the clogged gutter.

Exhibit number 439 as to why NOLA is a shite city.

I have always wondered why beads that no one wants or will take home are thrown.
Even in Alexandria the street is coated with shite no one wants, I guarantee there is a ton of beads swept up from our little parade. I cant imagine the tonnage swept up in New Orleans.
Have the Krewes pay for the clean up, they threw that shite out there.

What is truly mind-blowing about this level of incompetence over the years is that the hundreds of millions of taxpayer money spent on the new underground canals installed over the past few years uptown were probably TOTALLY UNNECESSARY! Incompetence and apathy has real consequences.
Let that sink in.
