Isn't that a state law? If you reside here for something like 30 days you have to change your license and registration.
Unless they don't reside here. In which case who cares where they register their car.

My guess here is they wanted to keep their residence in Illinois for homestead exemption or in state tuition for kids purposes.

How much credit does Louisiana give to taxes already paid in another state? Unless Illinois doesn't pay taxes on their cars.

It is pretty much law in every state that you have to switch drivers license and vehicle registration within 30 days...I agree with the others in that there is a lot more to this story.

These people were making 150k plus. I guarantee it wasn't because insurance was $800 more per year

They were all recruited by the same person. I’m guessing they had some telecommuting arrangement. If they register as LA residents, it throws their primary residence in IL in flux. In particular, schooling for kids, homestead exemption, other taxation for “out of state” residents.

This is related to a different law that requires unclassified state employees with high salaries to register their vehicles in Louisiana. It’s a de facto Louisiana residency requirement for these employees, which was passed due to frustration over some of Jindal’s top aides living in other states.
The question is why LSU’s Chief Technology Officer refused to permanently move to Louisiana, and why the administration thought that was OK.
