So this bill would require businesses to start paying overtime at 32+ hours instead of 40+?
Essentially making part-time full-time for purposes of benefits?
Seems like CA is just trying to chase companies out of the state.

Many school systems are adopting the 4-day school week, and this was pre-Covid.
Missouri has had over 100+ school districts go to a 4-day a week school system. It’s helping with good teacher retention instead of grinding them to dust watching all the little mouth breathers 5 days a week.

I didn’t read the article, but I’m assuming this doesn’t apply to salaried exempt employees?

Many, not all, jobs can be delivered in shorter work week. Life is short. More of it is always a good thing IMO.
As technology continues to advance, this should only continue (of course, many jobs will also go extinct). Oh how life is full of paradoxes.

also reduces the cost of busing/cafeteria/custodial/energy by 20%

I think that’s great.
There is a shite load of work hours wasted during a 5 day work week.

4 10 hour days would be fine.

So you're suggesting that these people wouldn't waste time during a shorter work week?
Jesus.

This is how you outsource 8 hours a week to India for a fraction of the cost

Lol if you think there’s actual “learning” happening on a Friday in public schools.

This
And with Friday to do personal business, maybe "personal days" could be lowered or ended.

Why aren't people doing it now? If the money isn't that big of a deal.

Would gladly work four 10’s and get a 3 day weekend but this is not practical from productivity standpoint for most jobs.

Ahh yes. They have less money and will hold their hands out to the government who will be happy to provide as long as you vote Democrat.

And how will wages be affected?
This seems anti worker.

EXACTLY. If companies could weed out all the inefficiency and wasted time, 32 hours a week would be plenty to accomplish what is currently getting done in 40. Keep pay the same and everybody would be happy.
15 minutes of real actual work

Why in the hell do we need the government to concern themselves with how privately-owned businesses structure their workweek? We don't.
Short of mandatory 16 hour days 7 days a week or some crazy shite there is no need for regulation.
Keep in mind that our current labor laws exist to prevent precisely the type of crazy shite you’re describing.
I think a government-mandated 32 hour work week is pretty silly, especially since you already have companies choosing to switch to 9-80 or (to a lesser extent) 4-10’s work schedule due to the productivity gains and as a way to attract employees.
It also strikes me as incredibly irresponsible to try to implement something like this in today’s labor market and inflationary environment. The end result seems like it would be either further increased labor costs or decreased outputs, both of which just make the inflation problem worse.
