14 years old and was at home sick.
Watched it live.
Same except 15. I watched it lift off on CNN and then turned it back to The Price is Right.
Was shocked when Dan Rather broke in to programming a few minutes later.

2nd grade classroom.
Didn’t really understand what happened.
Yeah, it was bad around school. I think we may have gotten out early that day. I don't remember ever having a gathering for a launch before but since a teacher was going into space for the first time it was a huge deal at school.
All of our teachers were giddy all day. Then in an instant their happiness was transformed into shock, disbelief and sadness. Really affected all of the students because of the event itself and then the teachers roller coaster ride just added to it. BAD DAY !!!

I was an infant getting my diaper changed and have no memory of the event because I'm not an old frick.

Seems like most who remember this are guys who were still of school age and remember it because it was different than regular schools days. I’m in my 50s and that day doesn’t stand out for me. The only two tragedies that I remember where I was when I found out are 9/11and the day Rhandy Rhoads died.

6th grade Gym class at Madison Middle School in Abilene Texas. They wouldn’t let us watch any of it. And I think we went home early that day.

I still don't get why it was such a big deal to hush up the fact that they rode that thing to death when they smacked the ocean instead of in the explosion. The already had one giant engineering frick up, it's not like that fact would make it any worse.

7th Grade. Was at my grandmother's house (sick). Watched it live as it happened. Definitely won't forget that day.

Just discharged from the Army and was waiting in Frankfurt Airport for a flight back to the states.

It didn't actually explode. It broke apart mid-flight.

Was there a hush up on that fact? I know there is really no way to 100% determine if they were conscious all the way to ocean impact, but there is a lot of evidence to suggest they were alive and conscious for at least a brief time after the explosion.
