TOKYO (AP) — A man screaming “You die!” burst into an animation studio in Kyoto, doused it with a flammable liquid and set it on fire Thursday, killing 33 people in an attack that shocked anime fans across Japan and beyond.

Thirty-six others were injured, some of them critically.

The suspect was hurt and taken to a hospital. Police identified him only a 41-year-old man who was not a company employee. They gave no immediate details on the motive.

Most of the victims were employees at Kyoto Animation, which does work on feature films and TV productions but is best known for its mega-hit stories featuring high school girls. The stories are so popular that some of the places depicted have become pilgrimage sites for fans.

Not many, at least that come to mind. The kyo in both Tokyo and Kyoto means "capital", which gives you a head start on the anagram

Coming from Japan, not surprising.

That's absolutely horrific. Combine this with stabbing in 2016 that killed 19 and wounded 25 and the stabbing in May of nineteen school children and it's obvious that a person doesn't need a gun to create havoc. It's not the weapon , it's mental health.

quote:

In Japan, hikikomori , lit. "pulling inward, being confined", i.e., "acute social withdrawal"; colloquially/adaptive translation: shut-in) are reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from society and seek extreme degrees of isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youth have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals.

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare defines hikikomori as a condition in which the affected individuals refuse to leave their parents' house, do not work or go to school and isolate themselves away from society and family in a single room for a period exceeding six months. The psychiatrist Tamaki Saito defines hikikomori as "a state that has become a problem by the late twenties, that involves cooping oneself up in one's own home and not participating in society for six months or longer, but that does not seem to have another psychological problem as its principal source".

From what I understand, mental health is a serious problem in Japan. Hell, they have a forest commonly known as the Suicide Forest because so many people go there to take their own life. If I remember correctly, there are around 200 bodies undiscovered that are potentially there and somewhere around 30 people go there to die every year.

It’s highly regulated and expensive. It’s so much of a hassle to own a gun, it’s pretty much not worth it. Legally, at least.

Imagine you are a Japanese guy who has been shamed, or undergone a period of "Reputation Destruction". Say at school, within the family, or at work? Humiliated at school or in a relationship ? Ridiculed by women while porn and available girls are ubiquitous. Estranged from a loved one? It could be anything really.

Now imagine you live in a society that says "the nail that stands out gets pounded down". A place where the whole trumps the individual. And imagine you have been shunned/shamed/can't cut it. In a society where shame lingers and lingers....

Yeah, well Japan has a million J-bros like that. Ani-social , rejected guys who may or may not be nursing a violent revenge fantasy.
