Have you not seen who uses public transportation in our country?

That’s exactly the issue.

If you invest more in all aspects of public transit (infrastructure, safety, personnel, etc.) the ridership will change.

People don’t avoid public transit because they have cars. They have cars because our cities are set up to need cars. We aren’t any different than Europeans on the whole. We are a human population just like them.

I took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and in between those two very large cities are about 7 other very large cities. A lot of which I had never heard of or realized how big they were. As others have pointed out, Japan is built different than here. We are spread out way too much for something like that to be viable. Would it be awesome? Hell yeah, financially it wouldn’t make much sense though. Their public transit system should be one of the wonders of the world, it’s very easy to get around and it’s awesome. People respect each other there, it would be a disaster here.

US population density - About 36 people per square km

EU population density - About 110 people per square km

Their climate is also very mild compared to ours. There are no 105 degree days in any major EU population center, and likewise the all time low temp record is -1 F in Brussels, as just one example. At that temp, people in Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis are breaking out the shorts and firing up grills. It's easy to make a city "walkable" when you don't have Alabama thunderstorms, Texas heat, or Louisiana humidity to worry about.

Yeah, we're just like them, except that we're not.

Like others have said, it’s a pipe dream. I wish we could have trains running in every direction out of every city. But the reality is that we’re a car centric nation and that will never change.

Way to come out the gate full of anti-western and anti-American bias. You really are a prog stereotype.

I see you hate truth.

We're planning for short term profit. "They" are planning for years down the road.

If you want to understand the difference, research how China came to dominate EV/Hybrid production.

We literally threw money at the problem, they built an entire infrastructure which blows ours away.

Is there even enough travel between them to justify it? And specifically, enough travel between city center to city center (this is a bigger issue in Texas than anywhere else)

The only high speed rail that would be useful outside of the Northeast corridor is if airlines operated routes between hubs and nearby smaller airports (ie. Birmingham/HSV/Chattanooga to Atlanta, Des Moines/MKE/Indy to ORD, etc.). I have to imagine airlines lose money on these routes and eliminating 6-10 flights could be appealing

Meanwhile, the average cost of a Delta airlines ticket going from Reagan National to JFK is between $130-$150 and travel time takes less than 90 minutes. Why am I taking the train again?

Does the train put you in manhattan instead of an hour away? Are you having to get to Regan >an hour before your flight? These are reasons the train would make sense and is priced comparably

Idk. The feds control trains pretty well, too, and those companies are influential.

1. There are no environmental impact studies in Japan. Right here in CenTex alone entire major projects have been halted or faced major alterations because of a previously unknown cave beetle and blind cave salamanders discovered at the development sites. Now you want to dig a 100' deep x 100' wide track foundation the length of Texas, and you think you won't hit something of interest?

frick those beetles and blind lizards. We’re the first era of human kind to halt production because some “previously unknown” insect may be harmed. Absolute lunacy. frick those turtles in California too…pussies will empty their bladders at the first sign of distress…that species doesn’t deserve to be here.
