In college I had a ‘96 Ford single cab with the straight 6. Great truck and bulletproof.

Having had many trucks of that decade.
The K1500 Z71 would be my pick .
Though the one I or the most miles in was the Ram. The Chevy was a great overall truck with the 5.7.
The Ford was nice too. Just too many around

The F-150 with the 5.8L and AODE. Even though the Vortex 5.7L made more power the Corporate 10-bolt is junk, much rather have the 8.8 pumpkin. Swap on a GT40 intake and a set of heads and a good truck grind cam, long tube headers, off-road h-pipe, Flowmaster 2-chambers, and a little EEC-V tuning for a great daily driver.

Would love to have a 1st Generation Lightning from that era, the prices now are eye-watering...

The T100 was kind of in between the little trucks (Hi-Lux and Tacos) and a full-size truck. For most suburban families, it was plenty of truck. Today's Taco is the same size or a bit bigger. Today's Tacos are approaching the size of my 1st Gen Tundra.

I almost bought a 96 T100. Found one I liked, but I just needed a little truck to commute in with occasional truck useage. They put Hardbodies on sale and it was a third less, so I got one of those.

I might still have the T100 had I bought it. Whle the early Hardbodies were great little trucks (I had an 86.5), but by '96 Nissan had decontented them so much they weren't nearly as good -- but still pretty reliable.

My neighbor has a black ‘95 lightning she bought brand new. She hasn’t driven it in over 10 years. I’ve always been a GM guy, but I do appreciate Ford trucks made before ‘97. Hate those damn ‘97 Fords.

1: Chevway. Always liked those.
2: Ferd. I like those vents on the window.

Out of the trucks, give me the Z71 easily.

But I was a fan of the Ford Bronco back then. Had a friend who had a ‘95 Bronco. It got about 8 MPG. Which isn’t too bad because gas was about $0.96/gallon back then.

I’m picking the Chevy. My favorite truck I ever owned was a ‘97 single cab Z71. 350 with 5 speed, Silverado package. Sold it after I got married because I figured I would need extra space for kids.

The manual transmissions GM put in the half tons were a little problematic, I never had trouble with mine, but very nice drivers.

I have a 98 z71 I still use at the farm. Still in decent condition, no dents or bad paint, but the dash has a crack (that I plastic welded back together) its got 180,000 miles on the original engine and transmission.

Would not sell it. Great truck.
