The Patriot! That's still one of my favorite movies.
It's one of those movies I consider "American".Other movies I considered "American" are as followed:
Top Gun

Here is an interesting take on the war that the British considered it a civil war. I never thought about it this way until I played Assassin's Creed III (I think). The game portrayed it as a Civil War and I started reading about it. But in the end history is written by the victorious and i'm thankful i live it the greatest country on earth.

I'll reference South Carolina since that is where most of my interest lies, but it was really neighbor vs. neighbor in SC.
There is the story of Bloody Bill Cunningham. Cunningham started out in the Patriot militia. When he got upset that he didn't get a promotion, he eventually was discharged (after being whipped for insubordination for trying to resign repeatedly).
After the discharge, he went to Florida for a couple years. He returned to SC in 1778 after learning that his family was being harassed due to their Loyalist leanings, especially by a local Patriot officer. This officer evicted Cunningham's father and whipped Cunningham's brother. When Cunningham learned about this, he returned to SC, went straight to the Patriot officer's home and murdered him in front of his family.
After this, Cunningham switched sides and joined a Loyalist militia unit.
As a Loyalist, Cunningham took part in what is known as the Bloody Scout. Cunningham took command of a regiment and committed a number of murders and massacres of Patriot soldiers and officials throughout the SC backcountry (basically anywhere outside of Charleston).
The most notorious massacre was at Hayes Station. Here, Cunningham and his men surrounded the unit of a Patriot Colonel and penned them inside a home. Cunningham burnt the home to force the Colonel and his men out to surrender.
Instead of letting the surrendering Patriots live, Cunningham had the Colonel and his men executed, 18 men in total.

Patriot militia activity and British defeats/lack of decisive victories at King's Mountain, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse basically drove Cornwallis to conclude that he needed to go to Virginia to destroy the source of Patriot supplies.
Patriot guerilla militas had also severely limited supplies reaching Corwallis's army, along with wearing them down. This led to the stategic error of Corwallis bringing his army onto the peninsula to be resupplied by the British navy, which never reached him because of the French navy. Team work.

I hope he's joking. While The Patriot is a great movie and all, it's about as historically accurate as other Hollywood history blockbusters like "Pearl Harbor", "Flyboys", and "Redtails".

Even The Hunt for Red October was better in book form than the movie. And the movie was pretty doggone good!
