Whitney Young is a superb school. Not totally surprising. It’s one of the 50 or so best public high schools in the country.

Please provide the ACT scores from the other 49 so we can compare and make some statistical observations and conclusions.

And proves absolutely dick. ACT scores are way overrated and don’t indicate anything other than you studied for the act. Congrats.

Now let’s see how much money a perfect ACT scores gets you. I hope we get an update on this class in a decade.

ACT does composite scoring now IIRC so you don't have to get a 36 in each section on the same test date

That's super scoring. Not what happened here.

Well, if my high school, the kids with the highest ACT scores tempted to also have the highest GPAs. So I’m pretty sure they were the smartest kids or at least the most motivated of the smart kids.

I saw Chicago native Marsha Warfield's stand-up on TV one night.
"I grew up in Chicago. Went to school in Chicago. Learned to conjugate the verb 'to be'.
You know: I be, you be, she be. (Audience applause)
Don't laugh, that's what they be teachin".

Whitney Young is the elite magnet school for the city of Chicago. So it’s the top students not a private schools for a city with 2,600,000 people.

Grok: The odds of 23 students from one high school receiving perfect ACT scores (36) are astronomically low. About 0.3% of test-takers score a 36 annually (roughly 4,000 out of 1.3 million). For 23 specific students in one school to all score 36, assuming a typical high school class size of 500, the probability is approximately (0.003)^23, or 1 in 10^77, factoring in independent scores and no systemic bias. Even with a highly selective school, the odds remain vanishingly small due to the rarity and independence of perfect scores.

Wow. Why all the vitriol ? It can get you into a better college and often get you scholarships. I'd call that a win.

The schools basically cheat on the kids behalf these days.

How is it cheating if it’s just a bunch of prep work/classes?

7 students at Ben Franklin in New Orleans (my alma mater) had perfect ACT scores this year. 31% scored a 30 or above. Franklin has less than half the enrollment of this school in Chicago (1,050 students vs over 2,100), so it's possible. If you put a lot of smart kids in a challenging school environment with great teachers, exceptional becomes the expectation.

Unlike most of modern public school education in the US, where the reverse happens.

From our latest alumni newsletter:

quote:

Dear BFHS alumni,

What a night! It was such a joy to see 60 of you at our NYC alumni happy hour on Wednesday. Thank you for making it such a memorable evening. We hope you had as much fun reconnecting with one another and meeting new people as we did.

We want to give a huge thank you to our generous hostess, Fordham University President Tania Tetlow ’88, for welcoming us to Fordham Law School’s beautiful campus. And to all of you who came: Thank you for being part of a joyful celebration of community, education, and the exciting future ahead for BFHS.

At the party, CEO Alex Jarrell shared some exciting updates, including our impressive ACT results -- with 31% of our students scoring 30 or higher, including seven perfect scores -- and news that construction is under way on our Katherine Johnson STEAM Center, which is on track to open its doors on the first day of school next year. Our beloved alma mater is thriving, and your support helps make that possible!
