That screen does look awkward. 
That's the screen for the premium trims, the standard trips have a smaller one that is less awkward.

That dial is more than likely a radio/ac control or a ride type selector. The gearshift is on the right side of the steering column. Push the button on the end for park, bump it up for reverse, down for drive.
The wife’s Benz has a similar layout.

This is getting ridiculous. How can people focus on the road with this shite? Driving is the most dangerous thing most people do, and we are creating massive distractions to cause more accidents...just ridiculous. Just drive and focus on the damn road.
