Cage might not have saved him but no way I would have a car like that gtr and cts-v without them. I truly don't understand how you could have purpose built race cars without them. They should've run that on an airstrip.

I’m having a hard time finding pity for this guy knowing what we know now.
I feel bad for his family. That’s a horrible way to die.
He didn’t have to die that way.

Bad decision for someone who seemingly knew the right things to be doing. Hopefully people learn from his mistake

I wonder if maybe there was a parachute failure. Step on the brakes hard and the car went squirrelly and rolled.

I don’t understand why people do stuff like this when they have young kids at home.
My Dad sold his bike when I was born, bought another after my youngest brother graduated high school.
I get that you can’t live in a bubble but it sucks that he won’t be there to watch his kids grow up because he chose to race a car without (what it sounds like) proper safety equipment.

That could change things despite waivers. Shame I’ve done the Short course there and liked it.

Did the drivers not do a track walk beforehand?
And there’s a good point for the other side if they did or were advised to and didn’t.

The braking area into T1 has gotten bumpy over the years, but that's when utilizing the road course. For this configuration I'm not sure where the braking area started, it may have just been the "run off" for the road course.

Can you imagine the insurance premium on a place like that? Coverage for allowing unskilled hot shots in the fastest cars in the world has to be out of this world...

There's multiple policies, I'm sure. Often the event organizer has to purchase their own coverage as well. ONE day of coverage is several thousand dollars.

All cars are required track insurance

I don't believe that is the case.
At least it isn't addressed anywhere in the paperwork. It is possibly covered by the event.

That says all you need is a regular seat belt
Thats crazy, when I looked at the safety requirements for the "Texas mile" they were also pretty lax compared to events sanctioned by recognized racing organizations. To run a car that will exceed 200mph at Bonneville requires a 6 point cage, 5 point harness, full fire suit with boots and gloves, and maybe a approved racing seat, on-board fire suppression system, approved wheels and tires, etc.

Unfortunately, safety only comes as the result of a death. None of these organizers push the element, until something happens. Look at even NASCAR. Safer barriers became mainstream after their star racer had to die. As a racer, you know what you need to survive a crash, but “it will never happen to me.” It can never be in your mind that you may die, while you drive, or you can not push yourself to the limits that you need to.

You can't slow down from 216 that quickly. It didn't even look like there was enough room to do so

Car was roll caged, parachuted, etc.... the car was a 2010 Nissan GTR built specifically for this event. He crossed the line at
216MPH, when he pulled the handle for the chute, the cable popped, he panicked and stood on the brake pedal, due to lack of space after the line for "cool off". when he got on the brake pedal, the car got sideways, back wheel clipped the grass and bit, and that was it. Car started to roll and tumble. Basically, he had enough time to think to himself, "shite, this is gonna hurt." He was going for the record of Fastest Nissan in America.
From another forum.

Roll cage wasn't built too well if his head got chopped off
Posted on 9/22/18 at 10:45 pm to Hammertime
If he wasnt wearing a HANS device it could have been force that ripped it off.

How did he do in regards to the cranium catapult record?
