Got my bag stolen in Barcelona after turning away 10 seconds to take a picture. There are professional pickpockets and criminals watching your every move there.

Agreed. Only it's more like...do stupid things in a foreign country.
A 20 year old college student is probably used to being able to leave college bars or frat houses on their own especially if a bar actually tries to enforce the drinking age to any degree. Being in a country where drinking age is 18 might be an additional factor in getting separated for a student under 21 and being able to buy what they want on their own, and once drunk any common sense on remembering this is a foreign country and new to you just gets lost. Any plan to stick together gets lost by 3am as well if all are partying which is likely to be the case.
Even if the person arrested with his phone didn’t physically harm him (like a pick pocketer stole phone in the bar without him realizing) a lot around this age are already dependent on phone to get everywhere even before being drunk and in a foreign country get factored in.

This happened to a relative of mine. He was in a major US city with friends. They went to a sporting event then to bars. His friends went home and he stayed behind to drink and seal the deal with a girl. He ended up dead on the sidewalk.
How did he die?

My buddies family is friends with this family and they think he drowned. The club is on the beach.

I could see that. Except for the part about the phone.

I used to solo travel there 15-20 years ago with no issue and now I wouldn't step foot there by myself.

Ironic that there was a thread making fun of people for thinking Mexicans kidnap people

Like the post above said. He was likely an easy target for a pickpocketer who could have had nothing to do with his death.

True, or he could have left his phone on the beach if he decided to go for a swim and wound up drowning, and the person with the phone could have just found it.
However, this post says CCTV captured him leaving with someone:

Here is a link to a report on the CCTV supposedly capturing him leaving with someone that was mentioned in your included tweet.

In an interview with CBS 42, Gisela Macedo, a reporter for El Periódico in Barcelona, said that the Mossos d’Esquadra police force have looked at CCTV footage showing James “Jimmy” Paul Gracey outside Shôko, a restaurant and club located in Olympic Village, at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday. Macedo said that based on the footage, which has not been released to the public, Gracey left the club with someone else, leading authorities to suspect that foul play was involved in his disappearance.

Man... I don't know what I'll do if my kids come tell me they're going to visit friends in Europe. I feel like I'm doing a decent job of explaining the horrors of this world but are you really ever fully prepared?

probably a lot safer than a ton of places on this side of the pond, just depends on the dumbassery level of the kid, seems like if they have a financial stake in financing the trip they are a little more responsible as opposed to having an open tab

I feel like lots of these stories end the same. Dude is a legal adult, but in 2026 a 20-year old doesn’t know shite. As long as my daughter is financially dependent on me while she is in college, she’s not going to Europe on some friends trip like this. Call me overprotective if you want. These kids severely lack street smarts and life lessons, and having them bar hop in a foreign country across the pond isn’t the safest thing to do these days. These “adults” are sitting ducks. Some drunk American dude wandering around at 3am may as well have a bullseye on him.

I would bet a drug dealing marauding band of muzzies robbed him and tossed him away. For thousands of years muzzies have wanted to conquer and enslave the western world in the name of allah. In Europe, they didn’t even have to fight. The leftists in Europe just handed it to them. Idiots.

Even many grown American adults are oblivious to just how much Europe has changed. It’s not the same place.

This was years ago but the Navy mandated buddy system when on liberty. And shore patrol would collect you if alone.
Also, ship had a small party travel to port of call prior and then gave briefs onboard for places off limits and places to see. Had local customs and laws to know.
In Turkey while on SP, we had to go with a legal officer to try and get a sailor out of jail for knocking a lady over and stealing her purse.
While inside the small jail, where I was standing you could see into one of the cells when they opened the cell door. A jailer walked to a fridge and poured a cup of water. Went over and unlocked door. Inside I saw 14 people sitting backs against the wall scrunched side to side. Cell was no bigger than 6’ x 10’. He handed first prisoner the glass, took a sip and passed to next. Then collected empty cup and locked it back. Saw our sailor in their and he looked like he had died, the grief on his face.
After 2 hours if negotiations we were unable to get him released. There is a SOFA agreement that governs certain crimes but its not mandatory they release its a blueprint that countries agree to work with. When we pulled out of port he was still there and had to be transferred (on paper) to the arriving fleet. No idea what ever became of him.
Always use buddy system. Learn laws and customs. Learn no go areas. Always error on side of caution

With this kind of detective work the family should fly you over there for a better look at things.

Baton Rouge is more dangerous than the vast, vast majority of Europe…
