Stanley Celestine Jr. will have an advantage over his fellow school board members. He'll likely know what students in the Avoyelles Parish School District are going through better than the rest.

That's because he was in their shoes, or at least their seats, less than two years ago.

Celestine is 19, a 2017 graduate of the school system he will help lead come January.

He expects connecting with students in a way they can relate will help both him and the school system. He wants to help students have a voice — and help improve a struggling school system.

quote:

More than half of Avoyelles Parish schools received either a D or F grade. The district's overall grade is a C.

While he cares about improving academics in the district, he also wants to focus on other parts of the student experience — the emotional and social side of going to school.

He will probably be the most active SBM on the board. Seriously. Just graduating from HS, he is aware of the issues in the school system, etc, etc. If their school board is like any other school board in the state, the other members only care about getting the insurance that comes with being a school board member.

I was born and still live in Avoyelles. My mom works at the SB. This will change nothing! Nothing ever changes in Avoyelles Parish. I think time actually slows down here!

He’s probably no less qualified than many others who serve on school boards.

I have never understood the desire to be on a school board.

I was shocked when I first learned that people were actually elected to that position.

It seems to me like something that you’d get appointed to if you frick something else up. Like an idiot that fricks up the sign for the new parish offices (looking at you Livingston) and the Parish President says, “you complete moron! Your punishment will be 12 months on the school board!”

Hehe. Yeah, it’s a pretty cumbersome position. A lot of local businesspeople serve for networking and commercial interests as well as other nefarious opportunities.

The cronyism aspect is always my primary suspicion for shite/low-level government positions like this.

At his age, probably not at first, but as W&J say once you’re in the “bacon wrapped shrimp club,” you will do what can to keep the checks rolling in.

I have seen some school board members in one Parish see it as a lifetime appointment as relatively few members get voted out and you usually only have to fight token opposition.

What does he want to do, hire a psychiatrist for each school?

TOPS has a racial component? I thought it was strictly merit.

That aside, I had no idea the Avoyelles Parish school board has the power to affect statewide programs.

He will try to make a difference but sadly will not, I truly wish him luck. Want to know the start of the school’s problem in avoyelles parish and many others? Desegregation by a federal judge. I was in school there when it happened and sad to say it has been a death spiral since. They had neighborhood style districts prior to desegregation but now to equal the racial balance they bus kids all over the parish....genius.

The only schools that have decent score are the church run or charter school that have poppped up. Don’t believe me just look at the results the state just put out.
