It says on the menu a 15% gratuity would be added to a party of 6 or more..... The receipt says they charged them 20%....like I said, 2 sides to every story

Uh huh, so that justifies stealing. Solid logic there.

If there’s a tip discrepancy, simply go to the manager and they’ll reduce it. No need to skip on the bill.

I’m surprised restaurants don’t require a credit card upfront for larger parties. It would avoid something like this.

If those 2 people paid separately, then how was this considered a group?

That group took up tables and servers regardless of how they paid for it. In this case, didnt pay for it.

I probably fight a dispute a year. Usually it's people with an AMEX trying to get stuff for free. I've won way more disputes than I lost.

Amex will always side with the customer.

But this shite has been going on for a very very long time.

And no, they will rarely side with the business. Maybe in your case, but restaurants get a shite load of chargebacks. They arent getting one dispute a year. They are getting one a week.

Almost all restaurants have a disclaimer in their menu stating that parties over a certain amount will be charged a certain % gratuity

I leave 20% on the table whether it's at the Waffle house or any steak house, and always draw a line through the tip line on the receipt.

In the restaurant industry, it's common practice to let your guests know that for any parties of eight or more, an automatic 18% gratuity will be added to the bill.

18 people got made about an $84 tip? Not even $4 for the whole group! Just goes to show how shitty of tippers they are.

And these are the same people who will be 'marching' and crying on tv if the restaurant profiled them. Just a bunch of losers.

BTW, I've eaten there. It wasn't all that.

Half of your tips have probably been stolen then.

Just because they all sat together, doesn't mean they are a group or should have been charged together. I kind of see the point about an automatic gratuity if that's the case.

Restaurants that charge the automatic gratuity for a large group will do so regardless if it’s individual checks or paid on one bill.

Some restaurants require servers to share tips. At the end of a shift, the server pays a % of sales back to the restaurant (say 5%) and that money is shared with staff that don’t typically get tips. If a server gets stiffed on a big ticket, they can get royally hosed because they may still have to pay the % on sales even if they didn’t get a tip.
