This makes sense, you kind of sound like a pussy so I wouldn't think you have 5 friends to go to dinner with

No bc when we go out in a large party they know not to add gratuity bc they know we’re going to tip more than what they add.

On no planet is 20% for food and 10% for alcohol more than what a standard restaurant gratuity would be you dumbass.

I had it happen not long ago at a steak house in Blue Ridge, GA. There was a large party, but about 5 different checks. Everyone in our party tips. I am almost always good for 25%. When it came back it had a 15% "service fee". I asked and was told it was because there 15 or so of us. I said fine, if you're good with it, so am I. On the line to add a tip I put .00 Service Fee.

Lots of assholes in this thread. The servers don’t make the policy. If they’re worth 25%, nothing is stopping you from tipping accordingly other than your ridiculous ego.

We had a party of about 14 and went to a restaurant in south Shreveport. When we arrived the waiter said, "We automatically add a tip to your ticket, anybody have a problem with that?" We sat down and I asked if anyone thought what he said was appropriate. The "anybody have a problem with that?" like he was some mafia-type guy kinda turned the table. We got up and left. The owner or manager came out and asked us why we were leaving and we told him what happened. He wasn't happy. The guy was correct in warning us, but his delivery was terrible.

I was a waiter / bartender for 5 years in college at about half a dozen restaurants.

Waiters operate the micros/POS, so we got to choose whether to add gratuity or not. It was a roll of the dice.

I knew who to add it to and who would exceed the gratuity if I chose to not add.

how else do you send the message in this scenario? the server should be furious that there's a 15% service fee unless it's going to them.

are the customers supposed to know about the "service fee" beforehand?

that's completely bullshite. look, ill be honest, i wouldnt have had the balls and jsut would have "yes sir, thank you sir, here's your additional 20%" because im a pussy, but i kind of respect the stance.

what's the alternative (after presumably respectfully asking about it, like they say they did)? take to facebook or public forums to bash the service fee? that is way fricking worse and much bigger loser behavior.

the customers are not fricking the server over, THE RESTAURANT IS. the server needs to know that, the restaurant needs to know that.

if he went somewhere with 5 people, he'd be dead before the appetizer plates were pulled. very angry guy. doesn't play well with others.

PJ keeps challenging him to a fist fight.

Uhh.. it does go to them. You completely missed the point.

He was saying it’s silly to be so offended by the gratuity (“service fee”) that you make a conscious decision to not tip.. and then to brag about it later. If you consider yourself a “good tipper” and normally leave 25%, why would the 15% gratuity turn you off so much that you say “frick ‘em” instead of just leaving the extra 10%?

As a server you sometimes roll the dice because in reality, there are many folks that will leave a bigger tip without the gratuity. That’s just how it goes sometimes. But going out of your way to write “service fee” on the tip line is just petty. And I somewhat doubt that anyone who does this would have actually tipped 25% anyway.

You gotta love the asshats that say, “Oh, I was gonna tip more but then I saw 15% and was like, no. You screwed yourself.”

People like that should have to work in the service industry for 6 months and take tables that think the same way.

You can always leave more you dip shits.

So glad when I spent my college years working at a restaurant that if someone refused the gratuity they were not allowed back.
