The union victory was a disaster for this country. It consolidated power at the top in Washington. The states became non-entities, reduced to gathering at the feed trough to receive their government handouts.

Having said that, we have debt as far as the eye can see. I don't see how this Republic will remain viable much longer. Too many people sucking off the government tit. You simply cannot sustain these levels of spending indefinitely. Something has to give.

IMO we're headed for marxist-socialism.

The 17th Amendment did more to consolidate power and strip states of influence.

That has little to do with the abolitionist movement.

The abolitionist movement wasn't just about the end of slavery, it was also about race equality. Abolitionists believed that slavery was immoral and that the black race was equal to that of the white race. The latter belief is where abolitionists lost most Americans. It's one of the reasons why Reconstruction was an abysmal failure. The vast majority of Northerners couldn't have cared less what happened to those four million freed slaves so long as they didn't come north looking for jobs.

It wouldn't be the USA if the union lost, no?

Which is why I scoff at the hero worship of Abraham Lincoln in this nation. It’s almost like the people that compile those lists of greatest president of all time and put his sorry arse at the top are big government loving losers.

Owning others wasn't just southerners as you label it
Northerners owned many of others as well

The South wins if they fight a guerrilla war. The problem was trying to beat the North straight up on the battlefield. They didn’t have to defeat the North. They just had to outlast the North’s will to fight and stomach for war. But they were too honorable to fight like cowards instead of men.

Would the alternative have been any better? If the South had won, it's likely Texas would have eventually seceded to form its own country. Other Confederate states likely would have eventually done the same. California, too, would have likely left the Union. It's quite possible that many of our territories that eventually turned into states would have likewise carved themselves off of the United States to do their own thing.

Civil war discussion always brings out not only the true historians, but the absolute top quality of the board.

We have the benefit of hindsight.

Furthermore, why force a state to be shackled to a nation that it views as foreign to its own interests?

This should be a nation of the willing, not a nation bound together at gun point.

Let me sum up this thread and how it will go.

Idiots will come here and call people long dead, traitors and other silly names, in hopes of offending said dead people. It's strange.

Idiots (not very many) will come on here and defend long dead people and the CSA.

Lots of historical facts will be thrown out, lots of assumed "facts" based on what someone told them, not on their own research, will be thrown out.

People will claim the Civil war was fought about slavery. People will claim the civil war was fought about states rights. (they are both correct)

Someone will call anyone not praising the North and flatly condemning the South, a racist. Someone will challenge that person to expound on his statements. That person will disappear.

Someone will claim the "south was right" or some shite.

A rare few will be able to discuss the topic intelligently.

Both sides were wrong.

Slavery is a terrible and unthinkable sin and has haunted us in a thousand ways since it’s inception. It’s the stain on the most successful idea for government and human freedom ever enacted.

The north however killed slavery at the cost of our republic. The founders knew that to be successful long term the states needed the latitude to deviate in areas not defined by the constitution.

Lincoln knew he was overstepping and did so because he believed he had to in order to win. I would argue that his actions had less constitutional standing than did the southern states in attempting to secede.

The consolidation of power to DC including taxation and subsequent refusal to allow the states to operate with the freedom defined by our founders will in the end cost us our country and many of our freedoms. All of which stems from the NE states refusing to allow other states the rights they are entitled to.
