Yeah, sorry. He's possibly getting shite for being overweight because kids are assholes and his solution is to not eat.

Talk to him, try changing the family diet for few meals a week to something healthier, less snacks in the house, work out with him, etc., maybe try a new sport or the same sport but a league away from kids in his school

Is it possible he was overweight and now he is at puberty and trying to lose weight to be more attractive to girls?

14 is a tough age. Could be hormones, could be wanting to just lose weight, or could be bullying/stress. Kids at that age are mean as frick to each other

No I meant he was a little overweight when he was 10-11. But has always been a big eater. He’s growing, and I feel like he should be hungry all the time. But I have to make him eat at 2 or 2:30 pm. Even then it’s barely worth noting

Is he at an unhealthy weight for his height?

This is really the biggest question. 10 lbs over a few months isn’t a ton of weight loss, especially if he has some weight to lose. Is he actually not eating or not eating as much as he use to? Not eating at all would likely result in more than 10 lbs lost over several months.

Boys naturally drop baby fat and get taller and thinner about 14-15. Pretty typical I think

All this is entirely possible, but if I don’t know for sure, I don’t know where else to go as far as a medical standpoint

As long as he’s within a healthy weight range for his age (obviously check with his peds) then it’s likely not an issue and him just being more aware of his weight.

Is he outright skipping meals or starving himself? Or just not finishing his plate anymore? What is it specifically that’s making you feel like there’s an issue here?

it’s not at all typical for a boy that age not to want to eat you out of house and home. Typical teenage boys eat like they have worms.

I dealt with this. It was a social issue. Getting made fun of for being fat. We helped show him how to lift weights, do cardio, and proper nutrition.

I'm sorry your son's suffering.

IMO, it's not medical, it's conversational. Sit with your boy and talk to him to show you're concerned and care. And eyeball him so he knows he's not excused until he spills. Maybe a neurologist appointment is a bit premature.

Wouldn’t their appetite and movement also go up as well though? Hell I bet most guys on this page can remember being 14, always hungry and always moving, but could eat anything on earth and not gain weight. I can remember eating peanut butter sandwiches right before bed to gain weight

Yeah, OP - how do his BM's taste these days?

I'm kidding - I agree with the words of the former fat kid poster, as a fellow former fat kid.

I greatly reduced my calorie intake for almost an entire summer. Went from fat to not fat. Upside? Got noticed by girls. Downside? Had gall bladder problems, which (ultimately) led to it being removed as a young adult.

And if he thinks the sting of mean words from some dumbass hurts, wait until his gall bladder craps out in the middle of the night.

If he's trying to lose weight to "stop being fat", maybe try to start with figuring out "what his weight loss goals are"?

yes that’s what I recall and known from family members that age. Growing boys eat a TON! So definitely something off.

I like the advice to take it as an opportunity to get him on a healthy diet and exercise. If social, weightlifting and exercise got me in shape and feeling more confident. would help with his appetite too.

ETA - don’t know where you are but I’d get a family membership to a gym or club and bring him with you multiple times a week to play tennis/pickleball/hoops or workout.

Curious why you went to cardiology and neurology first. If my kid, I would probably start with a psychologist and a GI doctor.

Honestly, I would meet with a dietician in person (both you and him) so you can both learn to eat healthy together. Gives him an out if he doesn’t want to tell you about the bully at school/online.

Sounds like he developed an eating disorder. Likely due to getting picked on. Eating disorders are tough, best of luck to you.
