They’re too busy paying for billboards all over town that you can’t even tell they’re for EBR Schools.

It’s a nationwide problem across demographics and political leanings. Huntsville City Schools is just as terrible.

When I was a kid, we were allowed 17 unexcused absences a year...so I made damn sure to skip 16 days...

Sounds like 13k fake students so they can still get the funding allocated to the system per pupil......

You can't fix a culture that doesn't place value on education

Well if we learned anything in the school thread yesterday, this is totally the schools fault. If the school doesn't punish the kids for skipping class, how can you expect the parents to be able to make them go to school? Just terrible.

Their parents are probably absent as well
This ... and no matter how much money you spend on it if parents don't make educations and discipline a priority it will continue to fail. This is all part of LBJ's lasting legacy.

I'm pretty sure it's mainly a low income demographic issue.

If they want to drop out, let them. The fact we have students that are required to go to school when the student or parents have zero interest in being educated is asinine.

Ok but only if it disqualifies them from receiving government assistance which it wont

I wonder how many of those are ones that get counted the first week of school to secure funding

The MFP count is nowhere near the first week of school.

Compulsory attendance rules haven’t been enforced for as long as I’ve been teaching. I’ve seen kids routinely administratively promoted who miss 30-70 school days per year and have been doing so since lower elementary.

Our school throws a fit if they miss a couple of days for vacation. Like we actually need their permission to be able to take them out. I get it, but at the same time, not everybody gets weeks off in the summer and/or during the holidays. Other than that, my kids rarely miss school, but oh, they can cancel school anytime they want. Public school would be happy to have my kids to help with the stats.

The solution is more money. Please vote to increase property taxes.

I am laughing bc I know you are being sarcastic. I just had a hard time upvoting it bc I hate all those tax increases by voters. But I did upvote.
