I would say a year or two in jail, with significant resources provided to him to try to rehabilitate him / deal with his trauma / mental issues.

It's definitely a tough call either way. Kids parents should be neutered though.

I hate to say it, but there is absolutely no way someone that age with that life experience will ever be rehabilitated. He will likely end up actually murdering someone once he gets out of jail

If I was a betting man, the odds are likely that you are right.

But we have to try, right? As humans, do we just write this kid off? No one should have to go through what he has gone through in his young life.

It's one thing to write off adults who continue to make bad decisions. But kids?

No one wants to hear this because government can't solve most problems so I'll just leave that out there. But, why not government oversight with private reformatory schools? Before you poo poo the idea, there are many Christian organizations that would sign up to be a part of this. They would love the opportunity to mentor juvenile offenders and show them another way to live. Many churches are involved in outreach programs for troubled youth now. Millions are spent on missions worldwide. Some of these funds would be redirected if allowed access to these kids before they attach themselves to a path they cannot get off of. Churches and congregations are usually the best and most selfless in responding to needs in a community. Maybe a partnership with law enforcement and the judicial system would work. Of course you have to admit there is a problem that government can't solve on it's own......

It's mind blowing that people think kids like this come from a normal 2 parent household.

The liberals would crap themselves over public money going to Christian organizations.

But your idea, to me, is worth a shot. What do we have to lose? We already have religious programs for the incarcerated. Why not extend that with schooling?

I don’t think he was implying that it was a 2 parent home. Just that both biological parents together or not at this point shouldn’t be allowed to reproduce if they’ve proven that they’re incapable of raising a child.

Well this POS who tortured, brutally murdered and burned a girl’s corpse was promoted in the front page by The Advocate as poster child for not having to serve a real sentence for the most horrendous of crimes, so this 13 year old should definitely be given a second change after rehabilitation.

4) The fact that this kid shot someone over $1

One at a time. I speak to my clients every chance I get to discuss "breaking the cycle". The problem is that people are so conditioned to someone or the government bailing them out, so they decide to do nothing and let bad luck and poor decisions continue. This goes for all colors of people. They all have one thing in common--they are poor and uneducated.

The kid definitely is fricked as far as having a normal life at this point, but I do feel bad for the kid. I think we can agree we dont want him in society, but this kid had about as bad of an upbringing as there is and that wasnt his fault.

Well, his mother was murdered and his father suffered a TBI in the same shooting, so I don't think you need worry about them reproducing anymore. This was after his schizophrenic uncle killed two of his siblings when he was in Kindergarten.

I know most OTers law and order hardasses who want to lock 'em up and throw away the key, but this kid had an extraordinarily fricked up childhood. Now he's going to be locked up for 7 or 8 years with other older criminals. What good is that going to do? Justice won't be served to the guy he paralyzed. They'll think he got off easy (and will probably shoot him in retaliation when he gets out). He will be an accomplished criminal after 8 years of criminal finishing school. Then he'll be unleashed on society, in all probability with an improved skill set, a bad attitude, and looking to make up for lost time.

This is a fricked up story. The sad thing is it happens over and over, but to less intelligent kids without vocal advocates.

Sterilize those that want to live off the govt and let them live in a project where all their basic needs are met. Let them do what they will.

They’ll die off in a couple generations

These kids are doomed the moment they're born. I really have no answers. Better and smarter people than me may figure it out and are trying. In the meantime, I don't want to be around it. I gave up on the issues plaguing NOLA a long time ago. You only live once. I'm not dealing with this shite.

$10,000 for optional, permanent vasectomies for all men on welfare.

Make it their choice.

Incarcerated with emphasis on mental health/education until 18. At 18 straight to the military. He’ll learn discipline and a trade, while being in a stable environment. Hell, he could even go to college on the government if chose to. It may be wishful thinking, but what else is there to help these kids have a fighting chance?
