There’s certainly a lack of vision in young black males. I ask my students what they want to be when they grow up.
Almost 100%, white boys and girls have some sort of career in mind. Black girls usually want to be a counselor, social worker or a nurse. Boys however, all entertainers, rappers, athletes, fashion designers. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. School won’t help with any of that, so why bother?

I don't think 13-year-olds should have "sentences." Louisiana is frickin' medieval.

You should find famous black athletes, rappers, and entertainers that did well in school to prove that school helps.
There are plenty of examples.

I know a certain person personally who is high up in the criminal justice system here locally (I can't say his name on here for obvious reasons). In private and after a few drinks he will openly admit that the only solution he can fathom at this point is to throw away a generation or two and just start working on the real little kids while keeping the teenage and adult ones locked up as much as possible. Coming from someone who has spent their whole life working in the justice system that is a sobering assessment.

Yep and he was 1 of 7, think about that statistic. Odds are way better than even that the remaining 4 will be on the poleese radar soon.
