It's a long read, but basically a 13 year old shot a guy during an armed robbery.
Everything about this story disgusts me and pisses me off.
1) This kid's home life - neglected, 4 relatives shot at, 3 killed including his mother
2) The absolute lack of a support system / mental health system, after all this kid went through
3) The fact that this kid wasn't properly disciplined after his first few "minor" illegal activities
4) The fact that this kid shot someone over $1
This kid is a poster child for "you are a product of your environment". He needs to be punished for his crimes, and he also needs a lot of help.

I hate to say it, but there is absolutely no way someone that age with that life experience will ever be rehabilitated. He will likely end up actually murdering someone once he gets out of jail.

Sometimes there’s no redemption. The wrong people are breeding out of control and creating these kids with no hope and an environment that all but guarantees they are going to end up dead, in jail or pregnant before they are out of their teenage years.
Blame LBJ and his great society and the politicians that keep it going

I agree. We joke about it here a good bit, but some kids really don't stand a chance because of what they were born into.

What do you think his sentence should be?

in the past, we've worked with some impoverished youth on the other side of the tracks more than a few times.
multiple kids have a rap sheet from the age of 12. one of the worst ones that broke my heart was a kid that had no food at home over the weekend (free food from school during the weeks.) mom stays at home and does nothing all day, despite having government assistance. kid gets hungry, mom is asleep, so he goes to a dollar general and steals a candy bar.
gets arrested. spends time in jail, gets out on bond from one of my friends. he doesn't have anybody to watch his back 24/7 so he steals food again, and voila, he's got a record and now is going to spend more time in jail. meanwhile mom has no idea how to navigate the legal system. He's going to see other people that have nicer things from ill gotten gains and go that path.
i'm not excusing it. it needs punishment, but there is a sad side to these stories other than just "another tPOS." They didn't just wake up one day and decide tPOS lifestyle was cool.

MF this. The great society (and racism in general) destroyed the rise of the black family and it's infuriating for those that care.

And this is why abortion reduces crime rates and can be a good thing in cases like these.

Hard to blame the kid totally because this is what he sees at home. It is all he knows.

ETA: nm I thought you were a different proggie poster
But it’s a sad reality that killing babies is the best bet.
We should stop them from being made in the first place with sterilization and birth control for those who are on the dole or aren’t going to be productive members of society

Chances are good he'll not get out of jail since it is very likely he'll kill someone while incarcerated to extend his stay to life without the possibility of parole.

I struggle with this.
I would say a year or two in jail, with significant resources provided to him to try to rehabilitate him / deal with his trauma / mental issues.
Upon release from jail, find a foster family out of state that will love him and care for him.
If he's reintroduced to the same environment, he may fall back in problems.

Forced education. Not able to leave until he earns his freedom with a college degree in chemical engineering or architecture from a top 10 college.
If he doesnt, he can sit in there.

The SJW teachers are looking for a reduced sentence for this exceptional student.
quote:
Judge Candice Bates-Anderson is expected to take the bench Monday in Orleans Parish Juvenile Court and sentence a chubby-cheeked 13-year-old boy to “juvenile life,” meaning confinement in a state juvenile facility until he turns 21.
In July, Bates-Anderson found Lynell Reynolds guilty of several charges, including attempted second-degree murder, for a March shooting that left another young man paralyzed from the waist down.
In a rarity for Juvenile Court, a group of Reynolds’ teachers plan to be in the courtroom Monday, hoping for a different outcome. They say Reynolds was a star student at ReNEW SciTech Academy on Jackson Avenue, and that he needs treatment for the unimaginable level of violence and trauma he has experienced in his short life.

Even when Reynolds experienced bouts of homelessness or went through periods of severe anxiety, he did well in school, said Filardo, noting that while he was detained at the city's Youth Study Center, he finished at the top of his class at Travis Hill School.
A few months ago, Filardo received a letter from him, listing the six books he’d read while detained. In his letter, he also wrote about his hopes for himself: “I want that whole world; I’m waiting on God to lead me on the right path, because I can’t do it by myself.”
Shits fricking sad man

If we stopped all welfare today, it wouldn't stop these people from fricking like rabbits and having kids. It would just mean more people living on the streets instead of living in ghetto housing.
How do you teach personal responsibility to a culture that hasn't had it for 60 years?
