The family vehicles are an extension of the house to me...no mask wearing. In fact, we only wear them inside public places where other people are. I think some folks, who wear masks so much, just forget to remove them in their vehicles...if focusing, everyone would want to remove that contaminated thing immediately upon exiting a building and heading to a vehicle.

They wear masks for the same reason they “sterilize” groceries, packages, mail, etc. before bringing them into living spaces, buy special cleaning fluids to wash vegetables and fruit before eating, accepted the idea that they couldn’t visit terminally ill relatives in the hospital because the loved one might get COVID, etc. Irrational fear.
Either that or they are women.

Since my wife was pregnant and we had a newborn during COVID I'm probably more tolerant/understanding of people's overkill measures than I typically would be
But when we go to a low-density outdoor place/event and see people masking their 7, 8, etc. y/o kids - WTF
Why? I'm sure it's about 1% people with certain vulnerabilities and 99% parents need to show the world they take it seriously and are better than the rest of us who don't sweat it as much.

Some people have gotten so used to masks at this point that it no longer bothers them.
So to answer the op question, it's usually either 1 of 2 things.
1. They genuinely forget they Evan have it on. As at this point, it's basically an accessory just as people who wear glasses don't remember they are wearing glasses
2. If they're driving a short distance between 2 places where they're going to wear a mask in both locations, they figure it's easier to simply keep it on.
So to answer the op question, it's usually either 1 of 2 things.

Honestly, I haven't noticed some big gap difference between driving mask wearers.
If it makes a difference, I did go to a doctors appointment several weeks ago and I had to wear a mask.
While I was waiting this black dude came in the waiting room and said near me and he was telling me how he hated having to wear a mask because it makes his face itch and that he couldn't wait until "they stopped all this crazy shite",
Not really an exciting story, but just in case you are one of those who sees one person from a different race do something so you think all people of that race does it.

I’m in outside sales and sometimes I have appointments in office buildings in the next block. If I wearing a neck gaitor then I pull it down if I’m wearing a mask I just leave it on

I don’t wear a mask anywhere. Didn’t when most everyone was and definitely not now when it’s like 10% wearing them. Didn’t expect anyone to mouth off at me and nobody ever did. I am known for getting into pleasant conversations with random strangers at gas stations, stores, etc.. I have had hundreds of small talk conversations for several minutes with people wearing mask 2 feet away. Never a cross word. I guess that I am fortunate that I haven’t come across any cult like maskers during the last 18 months. But when I see people driving solo with masks on I just mumble “what a dumbass” to myself. Actually, I think anyone wearing a mask is a dumbass but I keep that to myself when talking to them.
