THURSDAY NIGHT NOTES: Watching new data roll in tonight... here are a few notes and thoughts concerning the weekend weather situation in Alabama.
*The new HRRR high resolution model (00z) shows light freezing rain moving into Northwest Alabama Saturday morning between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. By afternoon, temperatures warm above freezing over most of North Alabama with the exception of the northwest corner of the state around Florence and Waterloo.
*Highest chance of ice accumulation Saturday is across Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties. How much ice? It all depends on how surface temperatures behave. It could be anywhere from 0.05" to over a quarter of an inch, and it is a very close call.
*For the rest of Alabama, it will be just good ole fashioned rain Saturday.
*As the warm sector of the storm system moves northward, temperatures could actually rise overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. This should ease the icing across the northwest corner of the state. Temperatures could reach the low 60s as far north as Birmingham Sunday morning.
*The possible exception Saturday night is the northeast corner of the state, where the cold air damming (CAD) effect could bring in colder air from the east, and some freezing rain could fall there, mainly across parts of Jackson, DeKalb, and Cherokee counties.
*Sunday morning will feature rain and a few thunderstorms statewide. Maybe even a few strong storms over the southern half of the state.
*Temperatures will drop like a rock Sunday afternoon over the northern half of the state, and there could be a window for some freezing rain or maybe even a few snow flakes on the back side of the big precipitation mass.
*Temperatures will drop into the teens Sunday night across the northern half of the state, and after 2-3 inches of rain there is a very real chance of a flash freeze/black ice into Monday morning. This could create hazardous driving conditions.
*Temperatures over the northern half of the state will likely stay below freezing all day Monday.

Current projections here are 5-8 inches on Saturday and 8-12 on Sunday. Fun times shoveling after a knee replacement.
Be careful, bud. Find a kid around somewhere and pay them well. That can be dangerous work if you aren't used to it. Not just the knee, mainly the ol' ticker.

On a fun side note, Kentucky Sports Radio is having a competition guessing snow totals in Louisville and Lexington for a donation to the charity of their choosing.
They got Jim Cantore to get in on it.

Jim is in NYC, I’m confused what the bet is?

That's my biggest concern right now, how high that freezing line rides up. I think we might get away with minimal but we're going to have a shite ton of snow with it.
Personally hate that type of storm because the cleanup is a mess. Shoveling through a layer of snow only to hit the ice at the bottom. Be sure to shovel in waves due to weight of the ice/snowpack combo.
In the southwest suburbs of STL, we should get 8-12+ with drier snow quality thankfully. And as far as models are concerned, the Euro has been on this track for a couple days at least. All the rest followed although the GFS is still stubbornly south positioned.
Stay safe.

Holy shite Mike Morgan “increased” his already absurd amounts. He always overdoes forecasts and is doubling down with even more

Euro has the setup nailed imo but for overicing some sleet areas to your south and just how quick the surface cold gets south.
Big picture is basically solved. Now... the details

My stepdad asked me what the 400w outlet on his Toyota truck bed would run if shite hits the fan (he knows it wouldn't be more than one thing), but I have no idea what to answer. Can that run a small heater or anything, or just charge a cell phone basically?
I have the same outlet option with my Tacoma and you have to engage it to get power, but I've never used it

There were massive wrecks tonight all by local grocery stores. People are going fricking nuts.

I'm more like a balance beam right now as opposed to the slack line.

Most 120v heaters pull up to 1500 watts whether it is a large oil heater or a small fan coil heater.
I doubt the truck would like that since it is 3 times what it is rated for.
You might be lucky with a TV, radio, stereo system, charger, or a lamp. You could probably run a fan, but who wants cold air blown on them, but summer might be different.

400 watts is about 3 amps I believe. Electronics and stuff. You can run a heater as long as its less than 400 watts.

Thank you kind sir, I've always had trouble understanding volts vs watts vs amps and how it all translates. I knew even small heaters used a ton of wattage, but don't fully understand how that translates to vehicle output vs. a generator. You'd think a vehicle with a 260hp engine and alternator could produce more wattage than a generator with a fraction of the HP

Some of the models are now showing way colder temps in DFW upon first wave arrival.
I would assume this brings down ICE and turns up Sleet.

Just turned on my TV. The number 1 recommended movie for me by Roku is The Day After Tomorrow.
Wtf

Not necessarily.
Its a question of how a few thousand feet above the ground cool.
It would be very normal for the cold to be surprising in its timing and coldness at the surface, but shite is dense and undercutting warmer air.

Me too!
I blame it on watching Fallout.

The alternator is probably only good for 140 amps or so. But that is at 12v. Not 110
You can actually buy cool generator attachments for PTOs.
400w might run the smallest space heater sold.

I would assume NWS Ft Worth is going to send up a balloon tomorrow afternoon for this exact reason right?
