re: Question on teacher pay raise

Private teachers make less than public teachers. Private schools do better than public schools in terms of standardized testing.

Has more to do with student selection bias than anything else. Public schools have to take every child; private can select from a pool of applicants and usually those applicant families have the additional economic means to pay the tuition.
The biggest daylight between factions center on foreign policy. Moderates still support US foreign policy efforts in Europe and the Middle East (Israel). Far left want to wash their hands of sending Israel and others in the region weapons and largesse.

If folks think the price of gas (and everything else) is high now.... Imagine if Iran has a nuke and can hold the entire ME hostage by threatening to use it! I don't understand why some folks can't understand this.

Because those of us above the age of 35 remember the big lie about Iraq WMD and the fearmongering isn’t as effective this time. Plus the administration didn’t even sell the war lie to the public before embarking in this quagmire.

The more the administration dismisses economic concerns with “yeah but the stock market is at all time highs” makes them seem more out of touch each day. The average person own very little equity but they know how much their grocery bills are going up, along with gas, utilities, you name it. Trump is making a similar but more brazen mistake as Biden by dismissing these realities.

Atlas Intel’s latest survey shows the environment much more favorable for dems. Their polling has been ok in the US except the cross tabs are pretty unbelievable. We will see. Plenty of time before midterms.

Dems coming in on the back of republicans cleaning up the prior messes only to deconstruct again and start the process over again is not the same as building on top of the previous administration.

The facts disagree. Look up the last several recessions and then follow who was in control. I’ll even grant the last recession was completely out of control due to a worldwide pandemic.

In particular, the report finds that since 1949:

Annual real GDP growth is 1.2 percentage points faster during Democratic administrations than Republican ones (3.79% versus 2.60%).
Total job growth has averaged 2.5% annually during Democratic administrations, while it is barely over 1% annually during Republican administrations. Applied to today’s total workforce, this would imply nearly 2.4 million more jobs created every year under Democratic administrations.

The Democratic advantage is even larger in private job growth than it is for total job growth. Notably, business investment is higher during Democratic administrations, with investment growth running at more than double the pace than it does during Republican ones.

Average rates of inflation—both overall and “core” measures that exclude volatile food and energy prices—are slightly lower during Democratic administrations.
Families in the bottom 20% of the income distribution experience 188% faster income growth during Democratic administrations.

Recessions last 50 years:
1980 Reagan (contributed by stagflation of Carter)
1981-1982 Reagan
1990 Bush
2001 Bush
2007-2008 Bush
2020 Trump (would have happened to any prez)

The most shocking thing about that graphic is that only 46% of republican men think they could beat him!

Agree. That is more telling to me. He’s 80 years old and falls asleep during oval addresses. Like a normal 80 year old to be fair. MAGA talks about the left as soy boys and yet a majority of right leaning men aren’t sure they could beat up an old guy.

And yeah it’s an absurd poll but is fairly telling.

Maybe we should pump the breaks on giving our shite to Ukraine and Israel?

Perhaps but that is a separate question and something under the purview of the executive and legislative branches. Threatening the compensation of publicly traded companies is well beyond free market economics and the rule of law.
You think the president should be able to cut the salary of a non-government publicly traded corporation? That isn’t conservative in the slightest.

"I've given a special edict that the defense companies who have the best equipment — they're not making it fast enough, and now they're all building plants all over the place — I said you're not allowed to buy back stock anymore," Trump said at an event for military mothers.

The president was referring to an executive order he signed in January that blocks defense contractors from paying dividends or buying back stock until "they are able to produce a superior product, on time and on budget."

"I told some of these people that are making millions and millions of dollars, 'You got to reduce your salary. I'm going to reduce your salary. You're going to put it into weapons,'" Trump said today.

Sounds like communism to me.
The quicker the world is rid of this monster the better. As the father of little girls this is my worst fear. Straight to hell and I hope he suffers for his remaining days.
Orwell just gave two thumbs up from the grave.
Single payer healthcare, strong border, progressive tax code that eliminates capital holder loopholes, eliminate gerrymandering everywhere, strong foreign policy as US leading defensive treaties, all of the above energy policy (fossil, renewables, we need it all).

I don’t support much of the culture war stuff. I’m more of a libertarian in that people should be able to be themselves but aren’t coddled/advantaged over other cohorts. No boys in girls sports, etc.
Report fraud through the FTC

I’d report your experience. frick junk fees and scammers.
I’ve always liked the guy, but anyone that believes in the power of crystals is a bit suspect in the critical thinking department. That said, he seems to sincerely care about the city and its people and that in itself is something.

Yup, and Trump still won’t do what needs to be done.

What do you propose? A third of the adult voting population in the US is a registered democrat.

Hannity said the shooter rushed the entrance. Took a single shot at a secret service member and was immediately arrested (how he wasn’t killed is a baffling)

But you can hear several rapid fire shots on video.

Jesus. That’s pretty scary. How in tf does this happen?

Shots sounded muffled, like they weren't IN the room, but did sound like gunfire

Agree. Sounded outside of the main room. Probably a psycho charged trying to gain access and was gunned down by secret service.
Consumer confidence hit its peak in 2000. It was a rocket ship higher from mid 90s into the dotcom crash. I was in my teenage years at this time and it was pretty much perfect. No phones, freedom to roam, gas was dirt cheap, jobs were plentiful, on and on.

I know that we tend to overlook the bad during our formative ages, but I do think we had it better than kids today. 9/11 really marked a schism in our society. Once we entered Iraq, it felt like social trust started to erode.

Oh well. We gave them every opportunity to save themselves. At this point, frick em.

The black and white thinking around here is ridiculous. Dumb even. We started bombing them first. A drawn out war in the Middle East is fricking stupid, especially at the behest of Israel. Ever heard of sunk cost fallacy?

Yeah it’s going to get worse for Iran, and I have no doubt more of their crazy leadership gets popped, but they will attack more soldiers stationed in the ME, and we’re open to all kinds of asymmetric attacks on our homeland and global presence. Think attacks to our power infrastructure, banking systems and China will be aiding them all along.

We need to figure out a reasonable exit ramp soon.
