He came out the gate in 2000 and brought a new toughness to the team. Ended a 10 game losing streak to the Falcons, dominant D-Line, won the franchise's first playoff game, two QB's who could win games (Blake/ Brooks).....It started so promising, but fell flat quickly. What happened? Was he just a bad coach or game manager? I hated his post game interviews.

Katrina certainly didn't help things. The Saints were coming off an 8-8 record winning the final 4 games. I don't know if he was ever going to get us to the next level, but Katrina expedited his firing.

He complained publicly about officiating and then the calls became punitive impacting his record and attitude.

Hell, Jim Haslett had run his course in NOLA long before Kartina came through.

Katrina was just a convenient excuse to completely start over.

2000 his first year was his apex and that was really because of Randy Mueller and to a lesser extent Mike McCarthy. Haslett was a terrible HC, especially when he didn't have competent personnel people in place to get talent.

He was a really bad head coach.

Got lucky with Jeff Blake in his first year. After Blake broke his leg against the Raiders, it all went downhill.

He also got lucky with Hakim dropping the ball in the playoff game. Because of winning that one stupid playoff game, the Saints let him coach WAY longer than they should gave.

I still can’t believe they missed the playoffs in 2002. They were 9-4 and only had to win ONE of the last 3 games to make the playoffs, and didn’t.

Didn't he play an injured Brooks over Jake. If I remember correctly Jake came in for a game sealing third down pass and everyone thought he was finally taking over just for Brooks to come back and shite the bed.

The last 3 games of 2002 where we missed the playoffs because of his stubbornness to play Brooks over Delhomme. And then following that last game in his post game presser, he blamed the fans for not cheering for Brooks. That's when I had a feeling the honeymoon was over.

Forgive me if I am wrong.. Wasn't that the time when Brooks was injured and people were calling for Delhomme to be put in. Haslett denied Brooks was hurt and made the statement about why he would put in a sergeant when had a general on the field?... we missed the playoffs and Brooks had to have surgery in the off season.
That was a time when we didn't expect too much from a Saints coach or team.

That first year he was here we had a defense that was pretty legit they knew how to get after the quarterback.

Then in the next couple of years they just got weaker and weaker.

I'm not saying the offense was great by any means but it was decent we had a good run game that one year would deuce and 03 I think.

But yeah that defense went from really good that first year to just mediocre by the time he left.

He gave up on Jeff Blake too soon in favor of a young Aaron Brooks who showed promise. Blake got hurt, but was a good QB imo that could throw 1 of the most beautiful long bomb throws you ever wanna see. But Aaron Brook replaces him in a game that Blake got hurt in, and looks really good and composed for such a young QB and the rest is history.

but Haslett's teams had some good defenses that were dominating at times with the Heavy Lunch Bunch or something like that as they were called back then on the DLine which mostly consisted of (big Norman Hand, Grady Jackson, and Martin Chase). Tough as nails La'Roi Glover was the All-Pro DT playing next to Hand, but La'Roi wasn't big like Hand, Jackson, and Chase. La'Roi was smallish for a DT at 6'2-280-285 if you wanna call that small. The Saints had some great nicknames for players and their offensive-defensive teams like the Heavy Lunch Bunch, Dome Patrol on defense and the Chuckwagon beef Oline with big W Roaf, Thunder & Lightning (Rbs Muncie & Galbreath). Players nicknames Cajun Cannon (Hebert), Breesus (y'all know who that is), the Beerman (M Lewis), Quietstorm (M Colston), and the flying Frenchman (Pierre Thomas).

But they were a dominating defensive line, Haslett specialized in that though, he had a great defensive mind as a coach. His defensive teams were always dominating at times.

This for so many reason. Haslett went with the whole square peg in a round hole w Brooks. Tried to force Brooks into what he isn’t and rode it all the way instead of adjusting the game plan or moving on to Jake. This was even more evident when Brooks had the throwing shoulder injury and he still wouldn’t roll w Jake to win 1 of 3 games

1. Hitching his wagon exclusively to Aaron

2. Allowing franchise players out the door for whatever reason. Willie Roaf, La Roi Glover, Joe Johnson, Kyle Turley, etc

3. Some really bad drafts and trades. Haslett was usually solid in the first but had a lot of misses outside of it.

4. Being defensive minded it's interesting how bad his defenses seemed to get and how quickly but makes sense when you trade for Tebucky Jones, Jonathan Sullivan, draft Josh Bullocks, Cie Grant, Courtney Watson among others

The 6-2 start in 02, Turley/Jets game 01, Carneys miss in 03, and starting 4-8 in 04

He was responsible for some of my favorite players in some way being Saints. Deuce, Darren Howard, Joe Horn, Mike Mckenzie, Sammy Knight but his downfall was probably too much success early and not being prepared for expectations so soon after replacing Ditka
