Underhill and Trip on on Payton returning

Nick- I’ll believe it when I see it. Doesn’t see why he’d come back. Probably be some other more appealing spots. Also notes that Duncan story doesn’t just come nowhere, someone wanted it out so he doesn’t totally dismiss it.
Trip- Could be Saints trying to posture as another potential suitor to drive up price. Was not a bitter divorce, Payton was not trying to force way to Miami, was truly burnt out. Saints would absolutely take him back. It’s not a wildly far fetched idea, but would still call it a Hail Mary in likelihood.
Nick- Duncan story came from a Sean Payton source, not Saints. Payton source could be drumming up interest to make Saints look like a legit option. It is a bad look for Dennis Allen, who is a close friend of Payton, so it could be legit interest to return otherwise it’s reckless to harm a close friend.
Trip- Speculated about Payton getting wind of Allen being fired no matter what. Doesn’t think he’d create the situation to get Allen fired. Still thinks it’s >50% that Allen returns, but if he doesn’t only 5% Payton does.
Nick- In 2015, Payton’s sources said he wanted to go to the Colts and he did in fact want to go to the Colts. Was offered $18-19 million/year by the Saints at the end of the season.
Trip- Saints even offered 1 year sabbatical.
Both agree you take Payton back over a first round pick, not even debatable, even if it’s a top 3 pick.
Nick- if he does come back, you write into the contract the compensation for another team, like Mike Holmgren had done.

I would believe Payton coming back in 2024, with a top 3 pick.
Clean financial slate
Solid OL
Young weapons
New QB
unless he truly thought DA was that bad of a coach and he'd be 9-4 instead of 4-9 OR he sees an easy division (once brady retires)

I didn't remember him wanting to leave for the colts.
So he tried to leave before. Maybe he was just trying to get the saints to pay him or get more power in the organization.
Anyone who wouldn't take payton back is crazy.
Only thing that makes sense is the couple of teams he wanted to go to aren't firing their coaches.

Nick also says if Payton had stayed, our QB situation would be Teddy Bridgewater and Cody Pickett. Says he’s quite certain of that. Fwiw.

Yes sorry Kenny. Not the mid-2000s QB from Washington

I didn’t either, but that makes 3 teams (Cowboys and Dolphins) he’s wanted to leave for.
For all the power he had in NOLA he really wanted out of the place.

The only other job he wanted was the Rams after the 2016 season

Sure seems to be the coach of the future

I swear this place is eaten up with Stockholm Syndrome.

But I fear I'm getting used to being held by you
My post history shows I have defended CSP and supported him more than most. Till this last year.

Same guy said DA was the smartest and best choice last offseason

This isn’t worth talking about. Y’all will believe anything

Payton said DA was best choice because he knew DA would fail. Saints could be an option again.

Just sharing some informed opinions nephew

He's not stabbing Allen in the back if he's going to get fired bc he would almost certainly keep Allen as DC. It would actually prevent the Saints from having to "fire" Allen. They could spin it as Dennis is more comfortable in the DC role, Payton had a change of heart after a sabbatical and is still under contract. The defense has been pretty stellar the last few weeks. The impossible pipe dream is moving Pete Carmichael to some sort of offensive advisory role and bringing Brees in as OC. I realize there is a 90% chance none of this happens.

Not how that works
