Brees couldn't handle the 3 days a week workload in California. No way he is going to move back to New Orleans to work 18 hour days in a job that he may suck at that will pay him less than any job he has ever had.

Once the Chargers flame out, that will be the #1 destination

I didn’t either, but that makes 3 teams (Cowboys and Dolphins) he’s wanted to leave for.
For all the power he had in NOLA he really wanted out of the place.
How many people here have held the same job for 16 years? Most people hit a wall somewhere in there and want to look elsewhere to change things up. That's not surprising to me. It's also possible that he left and feels emotionally connected to the success of the franchise - I think he legitimately hates seeing the team suck and thinks he could do so much better.
That being said - I think he's the Chargers coach next year. Him with Herbert would make the AFCW actually competitive with KC.

Payton returning would drum up some excitement for sure, but the Saints are over the cap, have an aging roster and no high draft picks.
Why would he?
Why would he?

That’s the point Underhill was driving home.
However, if they’re going to give him $20 million a year plus all the same control, no other team will match that.

I think Dennis Allen has proven that Payton is worth 20 million a year. Again, our roster is top 10 in terms of talent. It is not like he is stuck with a bunch of overpaid 35+ year old players.
I am 1000% confident that we would be 3 games up in the division with any combination of Jameis / Andy / Taysom with Payton this year.

I heard listening to a person who knows San Diego ownership
say that there is no way they would pay a coach as much as
SP would demand.

SP is not coming back to clean up this damn mess.

I don't think he's coming back. But if he does, he shouldn't bring back Allen.
That dude has lost all respect of the team IMO. he's a joke

It would be an awkward situation but he’s still a pretty good DC and would have a ton of interest if he were to hit the market

I think that’s a stretch but I think we’d definitely be around a game or so over .500

I’ve heard from a legit NFL insider (Ben Allbright) that Payton wants to coach for one of the LA teams at least about a month ago. He said Mcvay is burned out and is going to get a NFL booth job and spend time with his family (hence on why his coaches are already bailing for other jobs). Also, Brandon Staley has a playoff mandate or he get canned with the chargers. He could have Justin Herbert and a fairly good roster for him.
He’s normally right on most things but not sure how much insight he has with the Saints.

McVay just signed an extension through ‘26. What coaches “bailed”?

I like Payton, but I’d rather a top 3 pick.
Take Bryce Young. Hire a new coach that isn’t as clueless as Dennis Allen. It’s not all that difficult. Sean Payton is not the only coach on the market that can turn this back around.
Also, with the reports he has burned out and looking around other jobs, I don’t know why we’d rather have Payton back for probably less than 5 years, then a pick we could use to select a franchise QB that can lead us for the next 15 years.

How many times in the history of the NFL has a high first round drafted qb led a team for 15 years?
Sean Payton has 1000% better chance of turning the ship around without that, than that actually happening. You act like they are equivalent chances. This fo hasn't drafted a good qb period, at all, in any round. Only one I can think of in history of entire franchise is Archie. Great odds.

The draft is even more of a crapshoot at QB. I believe Sean Payton said Sam Darnold was the best prospect at QB that he had evaluated. Zach Wilson was not considered a bad pick at 2. Kyler Murray was the consensus #1. Lamar Jackson was an afterthought to Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold. Josh Rosen was a top 10 pick.
These are all examples from the last 5 years. The way college offenses are run now, you never really know if you are getting a Mitch Trubisky or a Justin Fields.

I mean what if this was all agreed upon by everyone? Like hey Sean take some time off, DA you slide up until Sean comes back. When he comes back you go back to DC.
After getting that theory out of my head.....that does sound ridiculous huh lol.
