re: Underhill and Trip on on Payton returning

Payton went on the Russillo podcast, I haven’t listened yet but here’s the link. 19 minute mark. LINK

I think it’s pretty clear he’s open to the idea IF some of the other jobs he would likely want (Chargers, Cowboys, Cardinals) don’t have an opening. Even then, I don’t think he’d been keen on the Cardinals now that Kyler just had the ACL year. He’s not going to put himself in a losing situation, that’s for sure. And I doubt the Cowboys let McCarthy goes unless they really flame out and lose in the Wild Card round.

I still think the Chargers get rid of Staley and they trade the picks for Payton. It just makes too much sense

Bingo. SP is like most Saints fans, loves the team but hates the city. I’ve come to accept I can support the Saints elsewhere as it’s in the teams best interest and would be fine with a move to Austin or London if that would help Sean and Skylene.

The Spun: There's a report that came out that said maybe we shouldn’t close the door on a return to the Saints. When you stepped down, did that feel like a goodbye to New Orleans?

SP: For me, it was a break, it was a reset. It was a little bit of fatigue and burnout. It was paying more attention to my health, spending more time with family, doing a few of the things that I hadn't been able to do for a while. I know there are other ways to skin a cat. I always hear people say, ‘Well, you know, you don't have to do this.’ But the schedule that I'm familiar with and what works for me is the way it is, so it was really needing a break from from that schedule. Fortunately, I've been able to take advantage of it. It's frustrating sometimes being away. It's difficult because you aren't in the arena, but there's a racetrack down the street. I see the lights, I can smell the gasoline and I can hear the engines. And so although you lead your normal life, you're periodically looking over the trees and you know that at some point you're going to start moving in that direction again.

That's a clear non-denial.

People really overcomplicate QB drafting

It’s extremely simple. Film matters. Character matters. How stats are accumulated matter. Can you create offense yourself? Can you read a defense? Or are you reliant on play calling and reading 25% of the field?

Bryce is can’t miss due to his intangibles and I hate Alabama. If you had the option of Bryce Young or Sean Payton, it’s an incredibly easy choice to pick the QB.

There are more good coaches than good QB prospects.

You’ve never met him. You don’t know him. Never been around him in the locker room. Never been with him in a huddle or on the sidelines


So tell me, how did you arrive at the conclusion of him having such great intangibles??

I’m not even saying that he doesn’t, just pointing out how you (and a TON of other people) love to talk about things that you have zero proof of just to reinforce your stereotypes that you put on certain players

Joe Burrow doesn’t count

Look, obviously I don’t have access to these guys. I just watch the games. Occasionally I’ll hear a tidbit from an analyst or announcer that has spoken to Bryce during the week. They go out of their way to praise the guy off the field. So does Saban. It’s not typical cookie cutter praise and it matches up with what you see on the field, how he carries himself, interacts with his teammates, etc.

Bryce Young is one of the coolest customer at QB I have ever seen. Especially in pressure situations. And it’s not incredibly difficult to spot good intangibles on TV. (Burrow) It’s also not bad to spot a low intangible guy on TV (Kyler).

Look, as Saints fans and LSU fans, we got to watch Brees for 15 years and Burrow for 2 years (I have watched him for 5 years now). When you watch a short QB like Brees for 15 years dominate with no Superstar level WR’s and a dead arm for half the time, you start to pick up on a lot of the intricacies of the position. Or at least I do, bc I watch the game pretty intently and normally don’t drink copious amounts of alcohol during it.

And Once you know what to look for, it’s not too difficult to translate it to your viewership of other QBs.

The job even becomes easier as a GM, Coach or a Scout, bc you get the All 22 film, you get to meet the guy, test the guy (wonderlic and board work).

If you can’t figure out which QB to pick with all of that intel and research, it’s pretty embarrassing to be completely honest.

Bryce is a slam dunk. CJ Stroud would be a guy I’d need to interview and see the board work on to make the call on. Just watching the game, he has size and talent, but seems pretty meh from a leadership and defense reading standpoint.
