Underhill & Paganetti evaluate importance of joint practices correlated to reg season wins

A lot of people just can’t make themselves fully grasp how much teams are completely throwing away preseason games.

These nerds wouldn't have written this piece if the Saints won 34-0 last week after having a light joint practice schedule.
Look, I believe this team is good enough to win the South, but it could go horribly wrong. Shough turned water into wine at the end of last year and we got hot against some mediocre teams.
We haven't exactly proven anything. We will need to prove it this year. A 34-0 beat down in a preseason game is technically meaningless, but it also shows that we are overly reliant on 10-15 players to be successful. Teams that compete to win it all are typically deeper than we are now. It will take a few more years to build that depth.

Joint practices are scripted and organized, so it takes a lot of the risk away. Preseason games are fricking nightmares.

Preseason games are to an extent as long as the opposing coaches are somewhat cooperative. I remember a new coach in the league in the 2010s (may have been Jim Harbaugh) got miffed when Sean Payton reached out asking if there were specific blitzes he wanted the Saints to use that they needed work on. Maybe that doesn't occur anymore, but it certainly did at one point.

You're also assuming if we play that game 10 times we get beat handily like that the vast majority of the time. Sometimes it's just not your day. At some point this season the Saints will play their best game of the year and they'll play their worst game of the year. We have no clue if this past game was who they are (at least that group of players) or if it was just an off day.

He has the saints as a win vs the jags.
Loss vs the rams.
And a win vs the cowboys but not clear enough. He is just grading off who won the joint practices over 3 days.
This bodes well for the saints. I think we all agree that the saints should be much improved this yr.

The preseason could mean absolutely nothing. Particularly given the Saints didn't play their starters (though neither did the Rams). But it is interesting to look at some of the scores from week 2 involving the teams with the lowest Super Bowl odds...which presumably correlates with what oddsmakers think are the worst teams in the NFL

Giants - 26
Dolphins - 3
Bills - 31
Browns - 7
That could mean absolutely nothing and just be a coincidence. But it's also not great company to keep.

ever since they went from four preseason games to three preseason games things have gotten goofy.
it'll no doubt get worse if they go to 18 games and cut another preseason game out but oh well

The nfl has accepted shitty football early in the season for more profit. The NFL will not give up on a 18 week schedule sadly.

What the hell are you talking about?? Ryan Paganetti has no affiliation at all (fan, employee or otherwise) with the Saints. Exactly why would our game against the Rams make him write this. Get a clue.

The play calling was definitely goofy. I mean multiple plays where your WRs are stacked 5 yds apart. Who designs that BS? You are setting your team up for failure. This is what I'm talking about when I say Shoughs plays are totally different than anyone else on the team. This isn't evaluating QBs. This is a shite show.

Well the Post mentioned Underhill, who is one of the Saints fan boy nerds. My bad. I take blog boys with a grain of salt. I haven't given up on this team, but I'm also not going to blindly defend them for everything.
