Tyrann Mathieu made an intriguing visit to the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, but even he has doubts about whether a fit exists between the two parties.

The veteran safety and New Orleans native visited the Saints, but did so while visiting with family. In other words, the visit was not the primary reason Mathieu was in New Orleans, which would seemingly make it less significant.

Mathieu said the chance to play for the Saints would be a “great opportunity,” but admitted that the team probably does not need him.

“Those guys have done a great thing,” Mathieu said, via Wilson Alexander of The Advocate. “The last couple years, they’ve been like top 5 in defense. I don’t think they really need me, but it would be good to go back home and help them win.”

Mathieu is certainly clear-eyed about the situation. The Saints already signed safety Marcus Maye to a $28.5 million contract last March, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson is poised to handle the other safety position. That really doesn’t leave room for Mathieu, who is getting more realistic interest from elsewhere.

Well, I wouldn't call that encouraging.

"they've been great, they won't pay me 17 million a year even though i'm about to be 30 and lost a step but it would be great to go back home."

He was never coming even though I argue he’d still have a starting spot since CGJ plays more of that nickel role close to the line and in the slot which would leave Mathieu and Maye as the FS and SS. It’s more likely they try to get by with PJ as the 3rd safety and most likely draft a safety in the top 4 rounds. This is the draft to use the good number of picks we have to restock the roster with cheap rookie deal. WR, LT, DT, S and RB all could use some influx of cheap, young talent.

Just backload his contract on a 3 year deal. Lets just deal with it later!

This:
quote:

but admitted that the team probably does not need him.
is misleading and does not match this:
quote:

“Those guys have done a great thing,” Mathieu said, via Wilson Alexander of The Advocate. “The last couple years, they’ve been like top 5 in defense. I don’t think they really need me, but it would be good to go back home and help them win.”

And the other quote sounds like we offered him the lead safety role. Likely just waiting to see if someone comes in with more money.

It was from another article (that doesn't have this negative spin):
quote:

“First and foremost, it’s a great opportunity with Dennis Allen stepping into the lead position,” Mathieu said, via The Advocate.

Here’s more of what he had to say:

“…It’s a team I grew up watching. Any time I get to play in front of family and friends, it obviously gives me more energy. It would be a great opportunity if that was to come.”

Edit:

This part was NOT even said by him anywhere. It's a complete fabrication of whoever the frick this yardbarker "blogger" is:
quote:

but even he has doubts about whether a fit exists between the two parties.

Yeah that’s a BS reason. We use 3 safeties. We have a hole there.

Nice way of saying they didn’t offer me enough money

Can you explain this one a bit? Are you referring to CGJ or Mathieu?

CGJ is more of a hybrid S/CB, Mathieu is more SS. But as others have said we run more of a 4-2-5 to be simple.

Other than some posters, I like the Maye signing. That’s our FS. I like PJ too as nickel or safety. I think Mathieu fits our system, but more as floating/ballhawk safety.

Ceedy Deuce is getting traded. They want no part if that contract in a few years, which is why he was bait in the Watson deal.

Honeybadger is coming.

This was clear.

I didn't understand why people thought he was going to sign.

I wouldn’t say it’s clear he’s not coming. I’d say it’s more likely he wants to wait until after the draft to get more money and find the right situation

So we are mad at players for trying to maximize their value now? Especially non-QBs, especially someone who even though it was through his own doings nearly had his pro career taken away before it was even started

I'd love to have him, for the right price, but if it does not work out for us because he gets offered more elsewhere then more power to him. If we do sign him then he gives us great flexibility in the draft and on defense. Part of the reasoning the Saints may not value him too highly is because Mathieu, Gardner-Johnson, & PJ Williams all play a similar role of a hybrid slot CB/S that can step up and play the box as well
