The Black Ages of the Saints: 1996 Draft

Hamp Cook of Hattiesburg was the New Orleans Saints’ scout for the southeastern part of the country when he spotted a “can’t miss” linebacker at the University of Miami prior to the 1996 draft. It was Ray Lewis, who goes for his second Super Bowl ring Sunday with the Baltimore Ravens.
“He had great instincts, could read and react,” Cook recalls. “A guard would come out and try to block him, and (Lewis) would just go right past him he was so quick.
“I put a big-time grade on him. And when we were discussing who we should draft in the first round, I stood up and told them they were making a huge mistake if they didn’t take Ray Lewis. The defensive coordinator* was worried that he was a little undersized, and he was. But I’d say he’s made up for that.”
Lewis, who is 6-foot-1, 240 pounds, is a first-ballot lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Instead of taking Lewis with the 11th pick, the Saints chose cornerback Alex Molden of Oregon. All together now: Who dat?

*Jim fluckin Haslett! The ex All Pro LB had some kinda dysfunctional ability to grade LBs. He drafted Sedrick Hodge, James Allen, Cie Grant, Colby Bockwoldt, Courtney Watson, and Alfred Fincher. MF that is a whole lotta major fail.

At least they didn't murder anybody. On or off the field.
Just sayin.

when you think who saints could have drafted over the years and didn't, it's enough to drive a person mad. makes me appreciate what's happening now so much more.

Kevin Hardy and Reggie Brown were LBs taken before Lewis that year.
Wow.
Wow.

It was that long ago? Wow. I remember wanting Eddie George instead of molden at the time

A health sense of perspective is good.

Loomis did it brah. Loomis is the devil. Not Haz.

Randy Mueller was GM back then.

Neither loomis or haz were involved in this

Are you guys that young or am I so old that my memory is failing me? I'm pretty sure Alex Molden was a "win now" type of pick in Jim Mora's last year as coach.

You have some inside knowledge that this ex-scout is lying here? Haslett was the 1996 DC. Loomis was in Seattle.

This. I also remember wanting Willie Middlebrooks, CB over Deuce.

I try not to think of how many good years we could have had with the great running game and defense of the late 80's, early 90's.
But we just couldn't get enough Bobby Herbert.

I was so pissed when we passed on Terrel Davis in '95 Draft in the 6th round. I was like we just passed on a pretentious hall of famer, i'm done with this GM.
