And just so we and everyone are clear, I already know what’s going to happen:
You’re going to stop responding to this because you too misread the rule just like the officials did.
Now it’s just a matter of how many posts it takes you to realize you made the same mistake re: statutory construction

But the quarterback didn’t intend for it to go backwards.

If we took the defender out of the play and the ball slips from the QBs hands as he is bringing it back, is it no longer a fumble but now an incomplete forward pass that went backwards bc he intended to throw it forward?

This is why the rule is very clear in saying that the throwing motion begins with forward motion of the hand.
It was written this way to prevent the sophistry being conducted by SloFlowPro and Mike Pereira.
Guess they need to write it in a Marks-a-Lot next time so even the dullest among us can understand

That the ball went backwards isn’t important.
It’s a forward pass.
His intent was to throw it forward.
The rules expert came out and told you. What else could you possibly want?

No
I posted the rule, an article from 12 years ago (with 2 similar examples) to explain it.
You're punching air, at this point.

The fumble discussion is separate from this one.
I think it was a fumble and disagree with that ruling. That is not relevant to this discussion.

Of course it was sarcasm. Every other post above made should make that clear.

And if that’s a ridiculous forward pass can they at least throw a flag since there was no receiver in the area while Goff was under pressure.
At least give me intentional grounding!!! Fcking idiot zebras.

If it's a pass (which I disagree with, but that's the ruling on the field), it won't be intentional grounding due to the contact.

The Ball Went Backwards.

quote:It is not the interpretation of the rule that has been in place since the "tuck rule" was instituted. It was pure BS and would never have been reversed for most teams in the NFL. It is as clear a fumble as there is.
Maybe this is a rule, but it’s a terrible one that should be changed. If you throw the ball backwards, lateral, that’s a live ball. This should have been a TD, and it makes the league look stupid.

Week 2 remainders: fumbles become incomplete passes

Published 12 years ago on September 21, 2014
quote:
In Geno Smith’s case, the only reason the ball went backward was due to the defensive contact. Alex Smith was moving his arm slightly, but in an obvious forward passing motion when viewed on replay. Because the actions of the quarterbacks made the ball a forward pass, both plays were ruled incomplete passes in replay. With the repeal of the Tuck Rule in 2013, the end of a forward motion ends the intention to pass, and not tucking the ball into the body. The next issue for these plays involves intentional grounding, as it was argued that these passes were nowhere near an intended receiver. However, the rules allow the word intentional to have meaning — the actions of both Smiths were intended to be passes to an eligible receiver, and the intentional grounding rules give similar deference to the quarterback as Rule 8-1-1a does to make it incomplete. In this case, if there is no eligible target in the path of the intended pass, the referee can still call intentional grounding. Such a call is rarely made, though, because it is difficult to actually determine what would have happened without the defensive contact.
When a quarterback’s arm is going forward in a passing motion, it counts as a forward pass if a defender hits his arm to make it go backward. Rule 8-1-1a states:
If, after intentional forward movement of his hand, contact by an opponent materially affects the passer, causing the ball to go backward, it is a forward pass, regardless of where the ball strikes the ground, a player, an official, or anything else.
There was no forward passing motion from Goff at all.
