The Athletic suggests a Saints-Seahawks trade centering on Larry Warford

Just two New Orleans Saints players carry salary cap numbers higher than $10 million for the 2020 season. Unsurprisingly, one of them is Drew Brees; the quarterback is due to count $23.65 million against the 2020 salary cap, more than any of his teammates.

However, the second-ranked contract might raise fans’ eyebrows. That’s right guard Larry Warford, who slots in with a $12.875 million salary cap hit. While Warford has been productive and reached the Pro Bowl as an alternate in each of his first three years with the Saints, his 2019 efforts have reportedly drawn internal criticism from the Saints. He needs to shed some bad weight and execute blocks better in the final year of his deal.

While the Saints aren’t hurting for cap space right now, getting out of Warford’s contract could help out in a big way. An outright release or trade would free up $7.75 million to spend this year.

But who could trade for him? The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia suggested the Seattle Seahawks give up a third-round pick to take Warford’s contract off the Saints’ hands:

The Seahawks have two second-round picks and two fourth-round picks and can afford to give up the No. 101 selection.

On one hand, that would be a risky move for the Saints. Their focus is on trying to win a Super Bowl. On the other hand, if they felt like Warford’s play was starting to slip last year and liked what they saw out of Easton, perhaps it’s something they might consider.

A trade might make more sense after the draft if the Saints use an early selection on an interior offensive lineman and are willing to accept compensation for the 2021 draft.

The Saints may have an in-house replacement for Warford in Nick Easton, who had logged more NFL snaps at guard than center when the Saints signed him last summer (and he ended up playing 409 snaps in seven games, predominately at left guard). But as noted by Kapadia, it’s also possible that the Saints could target an interior lineman in this year’s draft before deciding to trade Warford. That wouldn’t pay off immediate dividends but it would open the door for a rookie draft pick to help out right away. With a few compensatory draft picks on the way in 2021, acquiring another asset for Warford would give the Saints a strong resource pool to work with later on down the road.

Our starting RG for a mere 3rd? Saints are swinging for the fence this year, this compensation doesn't seem enough.

This depends on the internal evaul of Easton. But it's hard to feel like you upgraded the team a whole lot if you dump Larry and draft Cesar Ruiz, for example, at 24 to replace him.

He's a free agent next year, chad. and that would be good value for Saints.

I could go either way, but if they have a good contingency plan, it works

i don't like anything currently on roster for us to rely heavily on. It creates a huge "need" for us. I'd rather work on a 2-3 yr extension with Warford.

That's his problem. He has the athleticism.

There’s a solid group of guys in the draft at the interior OL. Makes sense to grab one even if Warford stays imo. Gonna need cheaper OL once Ram signs his deal

Could grab one of the LA guys - Hunt or Dotson out of UL, Lewis or Cush from LSU. McCoy could move to guard if need be, as could a rookie center

No chance they do this anytime soon. He needs to prove last year’s decline was a fluke.

There's not that many elite interior OL guys in this draft. Don't want one at 24

If they made this trade I’d be pissed. It doesn’t even make sense. Yes Warfords contract is large, why? Because Loomis kicked the can down the curb. Why did he do that with guys like Jordan, CGM, and warford? Cause they aren’t going anywhere. This would activate a cap hit of 5.5 mill and only freeing up 7 mill. You think the saints are gonna trade warford (who is very good) to for a 3rd rounder and to free up 2 million dollars? If that’s the case then we don’t won’t to win anything this year.

I think a trade could happen but it would have to be for one of Seattle’s second round picks. And that pick would probably end up being Robert Hunt or someone to compete with Easton. I don’t see a scenario where we upgrade that spot with a rookie. I mean Warford wasn’t great but he wasn’t Unger level bad his last year where McCoy was an obvious upgrade.

But who knows. Payton and co might really like someone like Hunt and think he would instantly be better and would rather roll with him and fall back on Easton.

Exactly. I think it’s doubtful one of those guys starts over Warford this year but next year? We will need someone because my guess is they let him walk and sign Ram long term

I think drafting a guard this year would just be for the future or if Warford got hurt. Them seeking interior OL tells me they want a future replacement and don’t view Easton as anything more than an emergency backup.

Guards don't command high draft picks. He's good but not elite. He has one year left on the current deal, so he's gone after this year. We have a solid replacement in Easton. And guard can be found in the draft in mid rounds.

If someone wants to give us a 3rd for him, you take it quickly. I don't think anyone would give up that high for him though.
